On the eve of draft night, and a week before the free agent frenzy begins, a number of NBA teams that hold sizable trade exceptions may figure in all sorts of upcoming trade rumors.
[These exceptions will allow teams to take on additional salary without giving any in return. Thus, they make excellent trade partners for other teams, like Miami and New Jersey, who are looking to free up as much cap space as possible for next season.]
Here's a list of trade exceptions in excess of $1 million, based on information available via ESPN's Trade Checker.
I won't swear that these numbers are completely accurate, or that this is a comprehensive list. But I do have a feeling that one or more of these teams will figure in trades over the next 24 hours or so, thanks to these exceptions.
Charlotte: $3.0 mil (R. Bell)
Chicago: $2.5 mil (T. Thomas)
Milwaukee: $1.7 mil (K. Thomas)
New Jersey: $1.34 mil (V. Carter)
New York: $2.48 mil (J. Hill)
Orlando: $6.8 mil (H. Turkoglu)
Washington: $6.0 mil (B. Haywood), $4.8 mil (D. Gooden), $1.4 mil (O. Pecherov)
Dallas: $2.9 mil (K. Humphries), $1.0 mil (Q. Ross)
Denver: $3.6 mil (S. Hunter)
Houston: $3.0 mil (C. Landry)
LA Clippers: $3.3 mil (Z. Randolph), $1.5 mil (M. Camby), $1.0 mil (Q. Richardson)
New Orleans: $4.0 mil (R. Butler), $2.8 mil (H. Armstrong), $2.0 mil (A. Daniels), $1.1 mil (D. Brown)
Phoenix: $2.0 mil (S. O'Neal)
Utah: $6.5 mil (M. Harpring), $2.7 (R. Brewer), $1.3 (E. Maynor)
Teams that are underlined are teams with projected cap space for 2010-11, and therefore may be unlikely to use a trade exception to diminish that cap space.
