  • Thank you Eddie!
I trust the NBA about as much as an insane, paranoid person who has the power to press the red button that launches nukes at some country halfway around the world for any reason whatsoever.  I trust the insane person more, I think.

Let's just put it this way:

I trust the NBA as much as I'd believe that Phil Jackson would leave his precious L.A. to coach LeBron in Chicago. LeBron has a better chance of playing second fiddle to Kobe on the Clippers, or becoming an astronaut next season.

As long as David Stern is the comissioner of the NBA L.A. Lakers fans can just pretend that every other team in the league are the Clippers.

I swear, Stern and Lakers fans remind me of that scene from the movie 'Idiocracy' with the receptionist @ a COSCO one thousand years into the future, Sadly, if current trends continue we may only be able to look forward to 'Witness'-ing the conclusion of another disappointing, rigged season. That and rioting Lakers fans being tear-gassed by the L.A. police force.   ;)

I've not trusted it for years. I recall a game with Chicago vs the Charlotte Hornets years ago that was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Scott Burrell was playing for the Bulls at the time and had fallen down on the offensive end of the court. The Hornets pushed the ball down the court and MJ fouls one of the Hornets as he's shooting. The refs call the foul... on Burrell..... as he's getting up..... on the other side of the court...... not near anyone.

I knew that the NBA looked the other way for stars but that was just it for me. I now look at all calls regarding stars or popular teams with sceptical eyes. And this includes some of the calls that Boston gets too.

Add what happened with LA vs Kings and I see no reason to trust them. I think the best thing that could happen to the NBA is if Stern was gone. I don't trust that guy at all.

Peace through Tyranny

Zero.  I have seen too much questionable stuff going on for me to have any trust in them.

I don't trust them, but i'm also really frustrated right now too. It is a fair point that the NBA is the hardest game to officiate and that coaches dont have challenges like in football. I wish we did.

I posted this elsewhere:

The ref thing is essentially a perception issue, so I think the league should invest in an independent study of all game video for a substantial random sample of games. All missed calls that were not made and all calls made should be tallied and the numbers should be released to the public.

This needs to be done so that the league can say, "look, refs will never be perfect, but here are the numbers and we can see that the missed calls even out". Without doing this, we are leaving the evaluation to casual viewers who don't know how to evaluate this scientifically and who don't have the research savvy to control for their own biases.

Of course, even if such a study were to be done, let's be honest. Many fans won't have the mathematical sophistication to actually understand it. They would still prefer anecdote to a scientific study. I don't think there is any reason to think that conspiracy theorists are interested in scientific studies.

The study would be particularly interesting if it included an analysis of what plays are hardest to get correct, and what styles of play most benefit from limitations of referees.

On NBA TV Ronnie Nunn claimed that a study was done by an independent focus group and that it turns out an NBA referee makes the correct call 96% of the time. I don't buy it though. Not until they release the name of the focus group and their individual findings, games used and allot allot of detail.

I trust the NBA completely when it comes to them doing what's needed to generate as much profit as they can for their members and organization, and promoting whichever players they currently consider the biggest "money-makers" in the league. Beyond that, the words "NBA" and "trust" shouldn't be used in the same sentence.

as a newbie, hard to tell. blow 6, i think.

but this question reminds me a thread called "thank you, david stern, it's you who make me love Celtics so deeply."
I don't even like basketball! Only God knows why I love Boston Celtics so much...

About as much as the money I knowingly put in to support the product - None.

If the Celtics were not in the NBA playoffs, I would have watched zero playoff games (well except if I was in the bar and they happened to have a game on).

The league has a lot of problems right now at the way it runs things and fining players, coaches, and owners 100k for well deserved criticism of the officials solves absolutely nothing. There were some games out there that were not watchable because of the officiating.

Then there is the matter of Dwight Howard trying to injure as many Celtics as he can before he loses. The league needs to further penalize rough play.

The teams themselves by and large did a good job and NBA parity is a lot closer than you think.

I don't like how the league is run at this point. It used to be a lot better.
