Well I'm actually really torn on this issue. I love this celtics team and I love this particular core group of players, but at times during the playoffs, watching Ray's shot struggle, watching Pierce disappear for stretches, watching KG disappear for whole games... well it's been tough. When Ray's shot doesn't fall, he really really hurts our offense IMOP. And Ray has become an incredibly streaky shooter at this point in his career. I hate riding streaky shooters, because they can go cold at anytime, including the biggest times (THE NBA FINALS!).

If Danny decides to resign, Ray, and add a piece or two (I would predict Mike Miller); then I'm cool with giving this core unit one more run at a title.

BUT... I do see this offseason as a big opportunity for the Celtics. And if Doc leaves or simply if Danny decides to go another direction (build around RONDO), then here's my plan:

-With Sheed possibly or probably retiring, that is awesome news for our cap situation and gets his next two years off the books.

-Do Not resign Ray

-Tell Pierce that we're rebuilding and that it'd be best for both parties if he opted out and became a FA. If Pierce knew Ray wasn't gonna be resigned, Doc and Sheed were gone and KG was gonna be moved, then he'd definitely opt out.

-Trade KG. I understand some people think this is the most difficult step, but after watching KG play, he definitely still has value to contenders. And next year he'll be a year removed from the surgery and generally players get stronger that year. I know Doc and the Celtics have said they fully expect KG to be healthier next year than he was this year, because he will be further from the surgery. So we trade KG to a contender. A trade to Dallas makes a whole lot of sense to me. Everyone knows Cuban would do anything to get by LA. They could trade us Dampier for KG (as the core parts of the deal, I understand other pieces would be involced), because Dampier's contract for next season isn't guaranteed, so we could trade for him and then cut him and simply get that cap space. Dallas on the other hand, gets KG for free. If they need it, we could throw in a pick or even Perk, but the main idea here is simply to get KG off the books anyway possible. Dallas just seems like the most likely trade partner to me because of Dampier's contract and because of the possibility of a lineup of Kidd, Caron, Marion, Dirk, and KG.  If we throw in Perk, I don't see how Dallas would balk at this offer.

-At this point, the ONLY players under contract for next season are Rondo, Big Baby, and Perk (if he's not traded). That sets us up with a ton of cap space. And we can be REAL players in the FA game. Boston is a big market, the Celtics are the most storied franchise in the NBA, and we know Lebron eats that up. After watching these finals, how badly did Lebron want to be in Green going against Kobe in game 7.

- Salary cap is around 56 million I think (not sure on that number)? But then we'd have only about $15-20 mil or so tied up in Rondo, Perk, and Baby. We would have enough to offer two max free agents. And the Celtics would be an attractive place for FA's who want to win and create a legacy. We could get the Bosh-Lebron pairing everyone's been talking about, and convince them to come play with Rondo.

-Lebron and LeBrondo. UNSTOPPABLE in the open court. Imagine a lineup of:

Rondo
FA 2 (Mike Miller? Reddick?)
Lebron
Bosh
Perk

My point is that if Sheed retires, we are really only one KG salary dump away from being big time players in this summer. And that is something Danny definitely knows.

If Danny has a miracle KG-esque trade/plan up his sleeves this off season, they will have to put a green colored statue of him outside so we can all honor him as a true Celtics God.

But hey, there is nothing wrong with Dreaming big!

My plan for the Celtics will have to wait a few more days though.

TP for Big Dreams though!!

KG for Dampier and Stevenson works.

Dampier's contract is not guaranteed. I think something like only $500,000 of it is. But I can't seem to find that info anywhere.

Does Dallas really reject this deal?

Wouldn't it be easier to just trade Pierce and #19 for James (sign-and-trade) and an unwanted contract? Cleveland might be interested if they knew for sure that LBJ was leaving. They get a huge expiring contract, clear unwanted salary, obtain a first rounder, and get the second best small forward in the East (as opposed to letting James walk for nothing). That is not a bad deal under that context. James, of course, would come into an ideal situation. He has the championship caliber team already in place, young teammates, the rivalry with LA and Kobe that the media would eat up, a huge fan base, and he would still be the man on a team of all stars and HOF that like to work as a team. *Going over-the-top alert* If Paul opted-out after being traded, he could return and we would be all set to dominate the next couple of seasons. Plus, it would be pretty easy to build around Rondo, James, and Perk going forward, so they could be dominant a long, long time.

If you don’t want to win, don’t want to play team basketball, and it’s more about you then you’re probably not a Celtic." Doc 2010

Ok guys....I am totally clueless on how the whole cap salary works and stuff...

So my question is.....do we have a legit chance at any of the big free agents this summer? And if so...how?

Would appreciate it if someone can answer that for me and teach me a thing or two about cap space and stuff.

Thanks in advance.

  • Rondo = Good
Only thing we can hope for if the Big 3 all leave or get traded this summer is that the Celtics win the '11 draft lottery (and get a high pick in the '12 lottery).
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.

I dont want to see KG traded... i know his contract is ridiculous but i like him too much. Do the whole original big three sob story, I know, but not KG. He is ours!

I respect your dream. I really do, so I hate to shatter it like I'm about to.

KG is untradeable at this point - just too much money left on his deal. Unless he and the team come to a buyout agreement, he's gonna be in green next season. Maybe when he's expiring we may be able to move him. But not now.

Pierce is retiring a Celtic. Even if he opts out to sign an extension before the new CBA is in place (like Dirk is doing), he's not going anywhere. Wyc has all but assured that.

Where your dream is viable:
I think Ray is done as a Celtic. I love the guy, I do. He's a standup guy and does a lot for the community and he helped get Banner 17. But if the reports are true and he's looking for a 3-4 year deal at $8-10m annually, he's gone. Maybe we'll work him into a sign and trade, but anything over 2 years isn't happening IMO.

Sheed retiring could be a blessing, since him retiring essentially makes him an expiring salary. We could trade him to a team looking for capspace (Miami for Beasley would be lovely).

I would love to get a guy like JJ Redick, Orlando could be persuaded to do a S&T for Ray Allen... COULD.

Yikes potato! D. West and Mo Williams for Josh Smith and Teague? I'm going to go out on a limb and say Atlanta declines their end of this trade.
