Hmm... I wonder if we can ask Sheed to hold off on retirement until after he's traded. This could net us another piece without wasting the MLE.
Even a Sheed for Morris Peterson gives us a decent expiring to use at the deadline next year.
I think this is the most intriguing subplot of a Sheed retirement. If we know he is going to retire, he would have a ton of value, because it would be even more valuable than an expiring contract.
Whether it is taking someone elses bad contract to get an asset, or using him to get a good player from a team strapped for money (or looking for cap room), it would be a huge asset.
I'm curious if there is any type of rule against this? Is it not a giant loophole?
Pretty sure van horn was traded after he was retired.
Well, they can't be traded after they officially retire, however, a lot of times players will delay filing the paperwork, in order to allow things like this to happen.
If I remember correctly, Rick Fox was traded to the Celtics, and then retired.
If that's the case, we could package Sheed, Baby and Perk for a sign-and-traded top name free agent (Bosh, for example). The three of them add up to 14 mil... so we can take back 17.5 mil. Baby and Perk are only signed through the next season... If Sheed retired, he'd come off the books even sooner.
Lets not go overboard here. There needs to be motivation for the other team to do the trade as well. For a guy like Bosh, I don't think an injured Perk and Glen Davis is enough incentive.
