I love the guy (except for his free throw shooting), and maybe it is because he is still fairly young, but how can a guy who has the talent and athleticism that he has come out and play so poorly in the biggest game of the year? It just makes no sense to me. He looks tentative and he has allowed the Lakers to completely take him out of his game. He needs to come up big Thursday night for the Celtics to have a chance.

When the Lakers play off of him and he doesn't take advantage of it, it makes Tony Parker sound less insane. It also reminds us why he doesn't have the max contract that CP3 or Williams are worth.

I still love Rondo though.

the whole team played poorly tonight. It's unfair to single him out.

Us not playing defense until the 3rd quarter isn't on him entirely.

I do not think it is unfair to single out your point guard, the guy who is responsible for making the team go, when he comes out with no energy in the biggest game of the year.

  • Rondo = Good
Rondo is very inconsistent.  Just because he's been awesome a lot of the time this post-season hasn't changed that.

The Lakers aren't a good matchup for him, either.  I mean, he's being defended by Kobe Bryant and then he gets wacked by a bunch of super tall, lanky guys whenever he drives inside.
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.

These struggles are probably good for his long term growth.

He has some areas of his game to work on this summer.

So, again the complete lack of defense in the first half + getting pwned on the glass + our bench getting manhandled and you single out Rondo?

As always, I disagree with you vinnie.

In the context of all the "He's the Celtics best player" comments in recent weeks and "He's the best PG in the NBA", the criticisms make sense. If not for those, I would agree that too much is being made of his performance.

No one should forget how good he was in game 6 in 2008 after not looking good for much of that series.

Rondo makes this team go. If Rondo plays poorly, most of the time the team players poorly. Rondo is supposed to be one of the best point guards in the NBA. He needs to be much more consistent in his play. How many times have you and I read on this blog that Rondo is now part of the big 4, it's Rondo and the big three, etc. etc. etc? Rondo needs to come out with high energy and control the game for the Celtics to win Thursday. He simply did not do that tonight.

But what do you suppose makes Rondo go? Teamwork. Rebounds. Teammates running the floor. Players moving off the ball. We didn't do any of that. Maybe I'm the only one, but I think Rondo did come out with pretty high energy early on and then again in the 3rd quarter, but he just missed shots and made some poor decisions. But the biggest issue was that we couldn't get enough stops for Rondo to be able to control the game offensively. And when we did get rebounds, no one was running up the court fast enough.

Exactly.
If you're gonna point to some type of energy tonight, point to the defensive energy that didn't show up until the 3rd quarter. You can't win in the Finals playing one half of defense, point blank. That's on ALL of the players. I don't care what kind of energy any player came out with. They wanted more. We didn't. We lost.

But I suspect ppl are going to want to place the blame on one player tonight...

Good point. Rebound is what killed us in the begging. We got destroyed on the boards early on.

I am not placing the blame on Rondo for tonight. However, what I am saying is that if Rondo does not play well this team will not win Thursday night.
