Can anyone explain why Larry Bird doesnt come out and make apperances to support the Celtics?

As a product of the 80's [college and adulthood], it sure would be nice to see Larry and Magic come out together and make apperances. How cool would that be?

I looked for this to happen in 08, and I was sure it was going to happen this year and nothing.  Can someone explain?

I am not sure.  Is he still employed by the Pacers?

Bird's an Indiana man and is loyal to only one club, the one in his home state.

Larry doesn't really enjoy the public eye.  He's said in the past that the reason why he doesn't make a lot of public statements / appearances on behalf of the Celtics is because he wants the new generation of Celtics stars to get their glory; he doesn't want to overshadow that in any way.

Also, of course, being a Pacers employee probably has a lot to do with that, as well, and there could still be some hard feelings about being passed over for a management position by the Celts.

Yeah, if he is employed by the Pacers, it would look pretty bad for him to come and root for the Celts.  I assumed that he still was a Pacer but am not sure.

I'm pretty sure Bird said in 2008 that he didn't want to take any attention away from the current players.  Also, he's employed by the Pacers.  We know he's rooting for the Celtics to beat the Lakers.  He doesn't need to be at the game for that to happen.  His only responsibility right now is to the Pacers organization.

I can fully appreciate and understand that he doesn't want to take away from the current Celtics, but how cool would this idea be:

Both teams take a breather from their warmup routine, and instead have the '86 or '87 starting five from the Celtics and Lakers in full warmups doing layups, shooting etc..   Only to eventually sitdown and let the current players finish their routine and be introduced.

Wherever Larry is, he's always a Celtic to me.  Same with Cowens, McHale, Russell and any other Celtic legend that went on to coach, GM, etc. with another team.

Dunno bout Bird... but before game 7, Bill Russell and the 69 Celtics should be brought into Boston's lockerroom for a pre-game pep talk.

Magic was on ABC earlier in the series, maybe prior to game 1, and said he had asked Larry to come to a game, so they could be there together. He said, "Unfortunately, Bird was not able to make it". Or something to that extent.

Man what the heck? You would think he would go if Magic went out of his way to ask him.

That's Larry Legend for you...

Larry legend doesn't care for or, more importantly, need the limelight.  He is a man comfortable in his own skin.

Larry is always with us as Celtics.

I agree that Larry is a legend. I kinda got peeved when some of the current Lakers said the History of the rivarly didn't matter!  I wish Larry would even agree to be interviewed in his own town at his own house.

With a good series like we have here, A Magic, Kareem, Scott, Worthy and Pat Riley interview with Parish, McHale, Bird, Ange and KC would be off the charts. Esp if they took a moment to recant DJ's GM winning jumper Game 5 in 1985 in Los Angeles.

This would never happen, but how about a Celts vs Lakers 3:3 Wednesday [non playing day] of the series. TV, Radio what the heck they could even sell tickets!

  • You know my methods, Watson.
Larry is a loyal guy, and the Pacer's are writing his checks.

Also, Magic loves the camera...Bird likes his privacy.
