Just watched game 5 after work today (didnt wake up in time to catch it live, my first game i missed live this playoffs because of fatigue.. and ACF is so much older than i am, cant figure out how he does it at his age that guy has green veins)

Anywho where's the Garnett Love thread? he was absolutly brillant on defense yesterday and got no love from the media and he's not really getting any love here it seems.

Come on fellas, show some bro love for the big ticket.. more than anyone else he forced Kobe Bryant to try and win it by him self by shutting down the lane together with Perk, sure he made 2-3 pick and roll mistakes.. but no one is perfect

Bro love shall be given to the ticket

Hey ... we don't need a separate thread for each of our players ... we love ALL our Boyz in green!! ;)

That said, KG was awesome ... just when we needed him to be ... and I have a feeling he'll be even better on Tuesday ... along with Ray and Paul especially.

Go Celtics!! (TP)

He was our best overall player tonight, his aggressive hands and rebounding created a ton of extra possessions for the team. And we needed all of those possession because we turned it over and gave up too many offensive boards.

I agree that KG isn't getting enough run for his role in game 5.  Consider:

1) He absolutely destroyed Gasol.  I mean, he unhinged him.  Which is huge, considering many had been calling Gasol the best player in the series early on

2) His 5 steals and 2 blocks changed the game defensively

3) He grabbed 10 boards, and the team that wins the boards has won every game so far

4) He also chipped in with 18 points (2nd to Pierce) on only 11 shots, as well as three assists (2nd to Rondo among starters)

It was KG's best all-around game in the series, but with the demolition he performed on defense he definitely should be getting more national burn for his effforts

Garnett played a solid game and his defense was key on Gasol.  That said, you can see that KG is not the same player he was 2 years ago.  I'm convinced he is still hurting but not letting on that anything is wrong.  He seems tentative on offense (but give some credit to some decent LA defense).

What KG has done is re-invent himself as he's gotten older and more hobbled.

There is some truth in the fact that KG isn't back to what he was, but I think that tends to obscure from people what he's actually doing.  I made a post before the Finals began, detailing how he hadn't just outplayed good players like Jamison, Lewis and Beasley 1-on-1, he'd terminated them.  Just completely outclassed them.  Well, quiet as kept, since game 1 of the Finals he has done the same thing to Gasol.

If you look at his per-game averages these Finals, Gasol looks really good (18.8 points, 10.0 boards, 2.6 assists, 52% FG).  But if you look just at when he's been defended by Garnett, those numbers look a lot different.  When Gasol and Bynum are on the floor together, KG defends Gasol as his primary assignment (when it's Gasol and Odom, KG usually takes Odom).  In game 1 Gasol scored 16 points and grabbed 8 boards in the 23 minutes that KG defended him (vs KG's 12 points and 0 boards in that same period).

But in the 4 games since then, by my calculations (via popcornmachine.net and the game logs) Gasol has scored a total of 14 points in more than 70 minutes when KG had him as the primary defender.  Break that down to per-36 minute stats for clarity, and in games 2 - 5 when KG defended Gasol they have averaged:

Gasol: 6.8 points, 50% FG, 8.3 Reb, 2.0 ast, 1.5 TOs per 36 min

Garnett: 18.6 points, 65% FG, 8.8 reb, 4.9 ast, 2.0 TOs per 36 min

Again, this is over the last 4 full games when KG has had Gasol as his primary defensive assignment (essentially when they're going head-to-head).  I'll be honest, I just ran these numbers and they're so stark and 1-sided that I almost wonder if I made some mistake.  But it's all on spreadsheet, and I'm confident that they are pretty close to accurate.

So I'd say don't focus so much on what Garnett was in 2008...I say look at what he is now, and after getting smacked in the mouth in game 1 it looks a lot like KG's been making Gasol his son when they match up.  And before the series, there were many making the argument that Gasol is currently the best offensive big man in the NBA.  If Gasol is anywhere near the best big man in the NBA, I'll let you do the math on what that would make KG based on these Finals...

If the Finals had ended last night, Paul Pierce would've been awarded the MVP.  But KG would've deserved it.

The overriding story of this series to me has been that since Game 1 the Laker bigs have gotten steadily weaker and our bigs steadily stronger.  Bynum is mostly wearing down physically which is a shame, but Gasol is reverting to his soft 08 play - he's more and more reluctant to attack the rim and is just shooting stepback jumpers instead.  Odom has sucked all series but seems determined to take it to new levels.  And I think DJ Mbenga may be dead.

Meanwhile KG was the best player on the floor last night and looked very, very energetic and quick.  Perk hasn't put up good numbers but has been a great presence on D and has gotten some big offensive rebounds.  Baby of course was a huge factor in Game 4.  And Sheed has quietly (by his standards at least) been our most consistent bench player, and maybe our best post defender.

KG had an all around great game.  I want to see him come out and tear it up like another clinching game 6 from 2008.

I LOVE KG!! I have to take back my prediction, for now, of BBD being our starter power forward next season. Maybe the season after next because KG looked awesome out there.

drza,

I love the work you've done on KG's man to man defense.  I also read your post regarding how he shut down Lewis, Jamison and Beasley with interest.

Gasol must be destroying Perk, then.  Everyone seems to agree (no numbers to back this up) that Wallace is doing an excellent job on Gasol, and if KG is shutting him down like that, it must be Perk and Davis that he's getting his numbers against.  Obviously, Baby has very little chance against Gasol, but my recollection tells me that because of this Doc has not matched him up for significant stretches against the Spaniard.

Anyway, KG does indeed rock, and even if he's lost a step or two, he's still a heck of alot quicker and more agile than Pau Gasol.
