I can't disagree with the fact that Pau has gotten the benefit of a few dubious calls from the refs, but that isn't the sole reason for the discrepancy as mentioned by previous posters.

Pau has been taking it to the hoop.  KG has been shooting jumpers aside from game 3.  'Sheed has only attempted 10 2pt fgs all series.   Baby has attempted 12 ft's in about half the playing time that Gasol has and has been far from our #1 or 2 option except last quarter.

Maybe a few calls have been questionable but, I think Gasol's played with heart and determination for most part. Well that is until Davis appeared to Bogart him in 4th quarter of game 4.  The calls I've had the most problem with are on Paul and Ray.  KG and Sheed shoot a lot of jumpers and we are lucky when Perkins actually catches the ball first to allow himself to get fouled.  Also like someone mentioned earlier taking it to hoop like Davis does (which is why the block thing is canard) is how you get more calls.

Games 1-3, yes, I thought the refs were helping the Lakers. But game 4 was pretty evenly called.  They let them play and yes, they missed some calls, but they missed them on both ends.   That being said, I too am tired of Gasoft getting to the line so much.  They do let a lot more contact go inside when Celtics are on offense than they do when Celtics are on defense and that has been in every game.  I don't think the refs like our bigs very much.  And they just love that big soft marshmallow man on the Lakers.

i just hate Gasol...ever since he and the spanish team did the chinky eye picture...got me to hate the whole spanish team...

I actually love Spain in international play. Love the way they play from a basketball purist's perspective.

They just mentioned on NBA TV how Gasol has been able to stay out of foul trouble this whole series.  Gee... I wonder how he did that?   He is pretty much the only player on either team who has managed to do that.  I say he fouls out in game 5.  He is due.

I swear, sometimes what I see, and I have seen it at least three times in this series, are anticipation fouls called. Like last game. Pau got fed the ball way under the Celtics basket with Rasheed behind him but not in a good position to stop him. Eddie F. Rush was behind Rasheed and was actually blocked from the play. All he could see was Rasheed's back.

So Pau goes up with it and Rasheed sticks his arm out in front of Pau and hits all ball and blocks the shot at about chest height. 95% of the time my guess is there is no way that shot gets blocked without there being a foul. I think Rush knows that and maybe blew thw whistle to call the foul not because his eyes saw a foul but because once Pau got the ball where he did and Rush saw where Rasheed was positioned, he figured if Pau didn't get the shot off it HAD to be a foul.

He called a foul because he anticipated that there had to be a foul if the shot didn't get up and off. But it wasn't a foul, replay clearly showed that. And replay clearly showed that Rush was out of position to see the block and that it was pretty evident that both Wallace's and Gasol's bodies were blocking him from seeing what transpired. But Rush called it anyway.

As I've said, I've seen this a few times in this series and I sometimes think the refs blow the whistle and called the foul because they anticipate a foul had to occur, even if they couldn't see whether one did or not.

TP. This has been infuriating me all series. Gasol is now getting LeBron/Wade/Kobe calls. I'm scratching my head because i'm seriously trying to figure out when this transformation occurred.

  • You say when......
gasol fouled bbd everytime he is near him...they hardly ever give bbd the call..they call very little on gasol, not nearly the way he gets the call...he is on the block with contact, he gets the call...way too many there..!

Yep. Anticipation fouls grind my gears. I feel like the Pierce block on Artest in LA was another good example. I'd compare it to umpires calling the runner out when the ball gets there before the player and paying no attention to the actual tag. I'd expect some screwups, but these "best of the best" are messing up way too often. I don't care about Sheed's outbursts and reputation: call him the same way you call others.

Rasheed's third foul, the second one shown in the above video, is the anticipation foul I was talking about. Watch carefully where Rush is when he calls that foul. There is zero chance he could see any of that play

Or how about the Bryant drive and Sheed "foul" that resulted in Sheed's technical?

Eddie F. Rush is on the baseline underneath the hoop and doesn't blow the whistle to make the call.

It is the outside official 30 feet away above the 3 point line who blows the whistle and makes the call.

I hate it when officials who make calls outside of their areas.

Gasol is a good player, but I can't stand him.  First, his hair.  Don't they have haircuts in Spain?  Second, the so-called "star" treatment he has been getting this series.  Obviously something occured between the Finals in '08 and this year for him to be protected as he is.  I hope to see him foul out tomorrow, but it probably won't happen, just like they didn't dare foul out Kobe in game 2.
