i had a similar thing happen to me (and more so, an awful thing happened to my landlord) a long time ago. not nearly as bad as what happened to you, but similar. i lived in first story of a two story home, landlord upstairs (great guy) lived above me with his wife and teenage son. One day, he comes home, his wife is gone, left him a letter saying she was leaving him, moving to texas, along with his son, who he loved with all his heart. shocking and devastating to him of course. about a month later, he gets a letter saying they are foreclosing on the house because his wife had not been paying the mortgage for years. we had a week to move (again, not as bad as what happened to you, i had a week). i was shocked. i scrambled, could not find anything nearby and in my price range. i contemplated defcon 5, moving back in with my mother.  ;D

luckily, i met a friend of a friend, we found a place to live. that kid moved out soon after, but it led to me reuniting with an old friend of mine. it was a better place and it all turned out for the better. sometimes, these bad things happen for a reason. i hope you find a similar type of ending.

My parents are land lords and they have the least power of everyone they do business with.

They've had renters who completely stopped paying and it can take months and months and months before they can do anything about it at all.

Without a doubt you had a case here but I can see where moving on is sometimes the better choice regardless.

Good luck :)
