Lost in the discussion of Game 2 is how well Doc coached the game last night. Some of the positive things he did:
-
Attack Derek Fisher. We obviously planned on looking for Ray early and often this game; when Kobe switched over onto Ray, Rondo started to turn it on. And Fisher was completely ineffective on offense, probably in part due to chasing and fighting with Ray for so long.
-
Continuing to play Nate Robinson. Doc tinkered too long this year with Nate/Rondo lineups, but Nate/TA has been very effective, providing great energy against the shaky ballhandling of the Lakers' backup guards. A huge boost for us while Rondo rested.
-
Great strategy on Kobe. What's gotten lost in the referee talk is that Kobe was, like 08 but unlike Game 1, made into a jumpshooter. Every time he got close to the rim we had a big there right in front of him to challenge the shot.
-
Great interior attack. Hard to say how much was Doc's plan, but our interior passing, especially in the 2nd half, was as good as I've ever seen it. We got several layups for Rondo, Perk, and Pierce by drawing their bigs and the open man knowing where to go under the basket.
-
The timeout with 1 second to cross halfcourt. Tremendous headsup play as none of the guys on the court were aware (saw Scal yelling a lot though

). Also gave the players a chance to make fun of him, which helped us relax down the stretch.
-
The inbounds play immediately afterward. Unfortunately ABC completely missed the start of the play under our basket, but it was an absolute thing of beauty. We got Gasol switched onto Ray and the rest of the Lakers clustered on the other side of the court; when Ray got the ball the Lakers moved to double, but instead of Ray holding the ball and running clock like they expected, Garnett cut hard to the hoop, pinning Kobe on his back and creating a 2 on 1. Perk made a great cut and caught a terrific pass to lay the ball in. Watch it in slow-mo and you can almost hear that piano music from the commercials. My favorite play of the year I think.
Great effort all-around, but we had an excellent strategy for the game. Now it's up to Doc and the team to bring the same intensity to Game 3.
