Just watched game 1 again, and a few things stand out.  The game was closer than it seemed.  KG rushed a bit and bad TA showed up, but the single largest factor was the officiating.

The refs owned this game, start to finish.  I counted no fewer than 25 questionable calls.  80% of the 50/50 calls went to the Lakers.  This was a clinic by Crawford and co. on how to control a game without a fishy box score.  They didn't simply "call the game tight".  They called it tight against the Celtics, but allowed the Lakers to play physical.

I expect this to change when they play in Boston.  If it doesn't, the series is over already.

While nobody wants whiners in the Finals----I Agree Totally...The fouls on the C's were mostly Ticky Tack---while the fouls on the Lakers were actual fouls.....TOUGH to play defense when this happens....

it was like Game 5 of the Orlando series.

and if you REALLY watched the game again...you'll see it wasn't so much Joey Crawford with the Bad calls.....it was that numbnuts Derrick Stafford---!

I truly believe he Panicked after Pierce got taken down by Artest....a smart move by Phil Jackson....expect more 1st minute shenanigans tomorrow-!!

Joey Crawford is about being seen and part of the game. His actions when he calls fouls, the way he hams it up for the cameras, etc. It is too bad that he didn't get thrown out with that whole Tim Duncan drama. I can't stand it when a referee thinks that the crowd is there to see them vs. the players. This is what they remind me of…

You're absolutely right.  I shouldn't pin it all on Crawford.  The entire crew sucked.

And yet, somehow with all these questionable calls and the refs being on the lakers payroll the celtics were only called for 2 more fouls than the Lakers and actually shot 5 more fts than the Lakers.

It is curious that even though the refs were on the Laker's side so many of the Laker players themselves were in foul trouble too.

Yep, totally the refs fault the celtics lost.

Allright. I'll bite troll…

The Lakers were hitting the Celtics often and HARD committing obvious fouls that disrupted the Celtics rythm. Most of them were called, yes. The C's however were getting called for ticky tack fouls that got them into foul trouble. Big difference. Now go back to Laker land. Remember you were up 2-0 on the Suns and yet they were real close to being back up 3-2 on you.

The box score lies.  Perkins was rendered completely ineffective by ticky-tac fouls.  Allen was literally removed from the game after he stuck a couple of jumpers.  Pierce and KG were called for loose ball fouls, negating what would have been offensive rebounds.  Meanwhile, Gasol and Artest were throwing their bodies around and "outhustling" the Celtics while the refs swallowed the whistle.  Kobe is bailed out and goes to the line, but TA and Rondo just "can't finish".

Pierce got the benefit of the doubt on a few calls after the game was decided.  The overall foul count and FT count do not tell the story of the game.

I gotta say i was as sick as the rest of you with the officiating.
I literally choked on my spit with ray allens 5th foul

I did a little research about freethrow differential and heres what i found.

Both our past two opponents orlando and cleveland were basically top 2, which comes as no surprise to me.

However, lakers were dead last by far...

Thoughts?

All I can say about these threads is, "WHY?" Why do we have to have them? The Lakers outplayed the Celtics in almost every facet of the game in game 1. The refs called way too many fouls against both teams. Blaming the refs for this is an embarrassment to Celtics' fans. Unreal.

I agree with this.

Officiating didn't cause us to lose this game or be down by 20 after the 3rd.
The OP's video clip: I don't have a beef with any of those calls other than the "over the back" foul no call resulting the ball off of Ray Allen out of bounds.

Perkins "fouling" Bynum Clip: Ridiculous call, should have been an offensive foul on Bynum....Celtics ball.

Ray Allen's 5th "foul": A very weak call, I can understand it if they gave the foul to Baby, either way it was weak and probably understandable because it was the "superstar treatment call" for Kobe Bryant. (Though I've seen Bryant get hit harder and more obvious and he got no whistle).

Overall, officials and refs didn't cause us to lose.

We can do a better job to play with right attitude and right effort where we shouldn't need the refs to "determine" the outcome of the game.

Really, the WIN or LOSS should be in our hands, not the refs. If we play with less then we are going to be relying on external forces to intervene on our behalf and that shouldn't happen in the NBA Finals.

Let's not whine guys. Celtic fans should be better. Fact is LA just played better than Boston did. No calls would have turn things around for us.

Do I think some calls stink? Yes, for sure. Did it cost us that game? No
Peace through Tyranny

As much as I might never think I'd say it, I'm with Vinnie. We may have different views of this team at times but we agree this thread is ridiculous. Check out this one, from nickagenta, that has a far more rational view, that the way the game was called effected The Celtics, but wasn't responsible for the loss: http://forums.celticsblog.com/index.php?topic=38387.0

The abject blaiming just seems like whining and assigning blame where it isn't. I'm sorry. The game was called in a style that didn't benefit The Celtics but within that wasn't called unevenly.

There isn't a conspiracy every time The Celtics lose. Jeez...sometimes they just get outplayed. Accept it.
