CB Historical Draft: Vote Best Coach of the Era

Now that the CB Historical Draft is nearing it's end, we get to look back and vote on who were the best of the best for that era. Here is the first. If you want to vote for a player not listed, just post their name here.

I went Pop over Zenmaster because I think Pop's ability to develop talent and his commitment to one team in developing it and maintaining it for so long surpasses Jackson's hired gun, manage the egos of the best players in the game approach. Heck if Doc Rivers was given MJ and Pippen and Rodman and Horace Grant and Shaq and Kobe and Gasol and Odom he could have won all those games and championships as well.

I had to go with Phil.  10 titles in the era.  That's half.

I am in the school that Pop helped transform Parker into a star, Bowen into one hell of a role player, and transitioned Finley from star to role player. I know it's petty, and Jackson's hardware speaks for itself, but he has always had at least 2 great players. Though it could be said he helped to develop Kobe into that second great player on the Lakers teams.

You can also say Jackson mastered the art of find limited roll players and finding useful fits into his scheme.

My votes for Popovich... The reason why Phil has so many championships is that he's never coached a rebuilding team. He only goes to teams that are ready to win.

The voting in this thread is embarrassing.  Anyone that didn't vote for Phil Jackson should really be ashamed of themselves as basketball players.  I'm actually embarrassed to be a part of this community based on this thread.

And for the record Pop, has only won titles with Tim Duncan the best PF in basketball history.  Those teams also had David Robinson for some as well as Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli, not exactly crap for players.

David Robinson was on the last leg of his career, he wasn't the superstar he once was.

I agree that Parker and Ginobli are good, but when Phil came to the Bulls Jordan, Pippen, and Grant were who they were.  He had to manage their egos.

Pop had to help in the development of Parker (who if you remember the organization thought about trading with various bits and pieces to get Jason Kidd) and Ginobli.  On the other hand one could say that Phil helped to develop Kobe (I don't remember his pre-Jackson stats).

Jackson is a GREAT coach, but I went with Pop because I think that despite having Duncan he did a lot more as far as player development than Jackson ever had to do (which is always the knock on Jackson).

Now if Jackson takes the Nets job , or even the Bulls job (which he won't) and can coach them to a conference semi or finals I would definitely change my mind.

I voted for Phil...yes he had a Lot of talent around him, but he molded that talent. I would place Greg Pop second.

Glad to see our Doc Rivers on the list.

I voted for Pat Riley for quality over quantity.  He won four championships with the Lakers (pre-1989, I know) and another with Miami.
His Laker team beat the Larry Bird Celts twice in the finals, and I thought those Celts were among the greatest teams of all time.

Phil Jackson's teams beat the Nets, Pacers, Sixers...  (not so greatest).

BJ Armstong, Toni Kukoc, Will Perdue, and on and on were developed under Phil (not to mention Andrew Bynum).  Hell even Grant and Pippen were just in their third year for Phil's first year and they didn't do much of anything pre-Phil.  

To act like Phil Jackson didn't develop players is just absolutely ridiculous.  

And for the record Tony Parker had played professionally in Europe before ever stepping foot in the NBA (he was the rookie of the year in the French league).  He also had international experience playing for the French junior team.  He obviously wasn't an all star or anything, but he he wasn't as raw and unpolished as he is being made out to be in this thread.

and anyone that thinks phil jackson is head and shoulders above.....doc rivers OUTCOACHED him in the finals, no iffsandsorbutts

I voted for Riley, as well.

It's not as simple as adding up Jackson's championships and saying that he's better than all comers.  For all ten of his championships, he had the best player in the league, playing beside another All-NBA talent.  If Riley had that type of talent at his disposal, I think he'd have surpassed Jackson in terms of titles.

Now, maybe my vote should have been for Pops or Jackson, because this question is confined to this 1989-2010 era.  Still, I think that the job Riley did coaching the Heat was an excellent one.  He adapted his entire style not once, but twice to fit the personnel that he had.  That, to me, is a sign of outstanding coaching.
