I'm not sure if this is the right section, so feel free to move the topic if its not.

I had forgotten that he and Carter both played at UNC and were considered to be the next Jordan (Carter) and the next James Worthy (Sheed) when they came out.

Both had 5-6 years of being top 15 players in the league.  Sheed was integral to the Pistons Championship a few years back. Carter was brought to NJ to be the final piece in a championship puzzle (when they were good) and then again to Orlando for the same reason.

Using your own discretion as to what matters (All-Star Games, All-NBA teams, points, boards, chemistry, teammateship) if you had to judge which of these two would you say had the better overall career?

EDIT:  People pointed out that Carter and Sheed did not play together at UNC.  Carter played with Jamison (another supposed Worthy-Jordan comparison when they came out) and Sheed with Stackhouse (again compared to Jordan-Worthy) when they came out.  I guess I just put the two who didn't ever seem to care together (Stackhouse and Jamison didn't live up to their full potential but at least they tried more often than Carter and Sheed).

Sheed because he won a championship, and may win another.

Wallace.

It isn't close unless you just want to look at scoring and dunk titles.

Wallace played to win the game.  Wallace played defense.  He played team ball.  He has a title and has been to the Finals multiple times.

I was going to say Sheed for the same reason, but Sheed is never mentioned as a possible Hall of Famer and Carter often is.  I mean Robert Horry has more championships than Latrell Spreewell, but I wouldn't say he had a better career.

There's no doubt it's Sheed.

Sheed could have been even better than he has been, too.

This would be Sheeds fourth Finals appearance if not for that screwjob the officials gave Portland in game 7 against the Lakers. What was that, 2001?

So we are putting championships as the only stat that matters?

Pretty equal careers.  Neither came close to reaching their potential.  Both are extremely skilled and talented slackers.  Neither belongs in the Hall of Fame in my opinion.  We had a thread about whether Carter belongs in the Hall a couple weeks ago.  This series was a big nail in his coffin.  He's finally on a good team and he disappears when it matters most.  Forgetaboudit.

They didn't play together.  Wallace played with Stackhouse and Carter played with Jamison.  The 4 were never teammates though.

I don't think people are saying that championship is the only stat that matters. What people are saying is that giving a crap, playing hard, and being a top contributor to a championship is more important than having a great scoring average on a team that doesn't matter.

The problem with Carter and Sheed is that for significant chunks of their careers they simply didn't care. The difference between them is that at least Sheed played really hard and gave a crap occasionally.

I think most of us value being a key piece on a championship-level team more than we do putting up empty stats as a career loser.  Vince had his chance to prove his critics wrong this season, and he came up completely empty.

I was talking with a co-worker the other day, and i told him, that it just dawned on me, that for all the flack Vince has gotten (most of it deserved) for not leading his teams to higher hieghts earlier in his career in Toronto, He always had crappy teams.

I mean when your 2nd best player is either Mo Peterson or Antonio Davis...I can imagine how discouraging it can be to try and play hard to win on a consistent night-in and night-out basis.

However this is not to justify his somewhat underachieving career, just merely and observation and statement.

Its Kinda of like, what would Rasheed's legacy be, had he not been traded from Atlanta to Detroit after that 1 game?

(sheed was traded from Portland to Atlanta, played 1 game, and then was traded from Atlanta to Detroit)

Carter is on a great team now, possibly a championship team if Carter gave them anything at all.

Not to nitpick but they didn't play together - Sheed played 2 years with Stackhouse, went into the draft, then Carter and Jamison came in the next year and played 3 years together.

I just always laughed in the preseason when guys like Hollinger said Orlando getting Carter and losing Turkoglu was an upgrade.  Vince is a better statistical player in the regular season to be sure, but he completely disappeared after bricking those FTs in Game 2, and it wasn't surprising in the least.

Meanwhile Sheed hasn't set the world on fire but has stepped his game up in the playoffs and is showing great effort out there.  And he's a huge boost to our defensive versatility.  For all the headaches he's given me this year, I'll take Sheed any day.
