Personally, I don't think it ever left ... I think that it has remained the focus of this team, despite the disruptions that have taken place over the last two seasons.

But I do believe that we've had some lapses in that focus, from injuries that ended up being more significant that first thought, to personnel changes and adapting to new systems, and a change in the chemistry of the team overall.

What I mean by that is that Rondo has finally reached the point where he realized it was time to become the floor general ... the leader on the court, directing plays and controlling the flow of the game.

I think that was a difficult transition, both for him taking on the added responsibility, and for the veterans on the team, handing that control over to a young guy who they now have to put their trust in completely.

I think the subtleties of those adaptations made for some tense times behind-the-scenes, and that kind of a major change in the chemistry of the players, can make for some difficult obstacles to overcome, especially when dealing with such big egos.

Whatever those lapses were about, I think we're beyond them at long last, and that those feelings of a team finally clicking and flowing together as a cohesive unit, have finally returned.

Maybe it's not so much a return of Ubuntu, but more a re-commitment to those principles, and a re-alignment of the roles of each player into something more defined, and the unification of the great team that we witnessed two seasons ago.

What do you think?

I think that elimination competition, with the backing of a city, a fanbase, and a strong core of vet leaders brings out the best in people.

I think that a well balanced team with the right leadership can overcome perception.

I think UBUNTU is a red herring, a kind of charlatan trick to make people believe they're better than they are, in which an intended by product is that they realize not only exactly why they are, but what they can be.

I think it's 2am and I am 8 beers deep, but I think UBUNTU was a mechanism, a prop. I think it was a galvanizing mechanism that the Celtics used, whether wittingly or unwittingly to make themselves a better team.

But I think UBUNTU never left, but as we as a fan base understand it, never was. I think its more about Kevin Garnett's profane passion, Doc Rivers' hoarse, spent, but genuine voice, more about Paul Pierce's obstinate 'I can personally bring us there' personality and Ray Allen's calculating cool than about some object theme. It's more about Rondo's "I'm better than everyone else" attitude and Baby's "I want to prove myself" bravado than any kind of African philosophy.

Whatever it is, I think it is working. We are 'us' again in a way I haven't seen since the summer of 2008.

EDIT: But, I am just some guy that loves watching people who are taller than average play a sport for money. What the cuss do I know?

Double bock edit: and good on ya for a well thought out post from Bahku.

Yeah, I agree, IP (TP) ... I'm not sure who it was that decided to use it for this team, (I thought it was Doc, but I'm really not sure), but it was really a great "theme" or icon to focus around. I think it's also been used countless times by other teams in other situations, but just called by a different name. The core principle: Focus ... and it's a powerful one.

Yes, I believe so.  This team is looking better than they have at any time since perhaps that 27-2 run they have at the start of last season.  Or maybe even earlier than that.  I have to attribute that to their health and their ever-improving chemistry both on and off the court.
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.

I think even earlier, possibly ... say June of 2008, maybe? (TP) Congrats on 400 TP's, Pos ... I put you over the top. ;)

No - I think Ubuntu is gone. It got sick when KG blew out his knee last year and died when Powe blew out his. That was about three super stars accepting their roles for the greater good and everyone else fitting in.

No we have something new coming through - it's going to be about primacy of Rondo - not to humor him, but because he's potentially a superstar and that needs to be nurtured and developed to carry the team over the next 5 - 10 years.

I also think that's why Doc leaves end of the year. The team needs to be reconfigured strategically and tactically around a superstar PG. That doesn't necessarily mean short term drastic change to personnel, but I could see changing the offensive personnel, different utilization, new philosophies, etc. I give Doc a lot of credit he groomed the guys we had to make them trade-able enough to get KG and RA or successful role players over this three year run (the original consensus on the title window.) He got Pierce straightened out his first and second year as coach, which didn't really change Pierce's production, but made him a better leader. And then he got things aligned right for the 2008 run and kept it going for two more years. He was willing to let Tom Tib take D and get credit, including having him yell and shout the whole game (something many coaches might have their ego threatened by) and he's likely to walk away on his own terms. While I think he's far from perfect, the pluses far from outweigh the minuses.

No, I don't think so.

I think the improvement in the Celtics offensive play is largely down to the number of excellent matchups they had against the Miami Heat and the Boston CelticsCleveland Cavaliers. I think that was the cause rather than everyone figuring out their most effective roles for the betterment of the team.

I do think there defense is back in full force though (full 2009/10 force).

Oh, haha, took me awhile to see that one!

Staring at the screen wondering where the typo was. Okay, fixed.

Someone should tell the team then, cuz they're still using it as their rallying cry, motto and primary focus. ;)
