It wasn't a bad trade idea at the time. The primary reason for making it was getting more talent (and younger) for an expiring deal, not that Ray wasn't a valuable asset as a player.
I'm glad Ray's still here because he's really picked up his game since the deadline passed but if Danny made that trade, I think we'd have done ok with it. Butler and Jamison would have done well on this team -- more talent on the C's and a real 'team' concept. Think of bringing in Jamison off the bench as a scoring forward, which we really don't have now, with him going up against other teams' second units, he'd be doing just fine. Butler's not the shooter that Ray is but Butler's still a very good scorer and can defend.
TP, Slam for saying better than I could exactly what i was thinking.
I was for the trade then and stand by it. Also, Dallas got Haywood, maybe we could have too in place of Jamison, although for the reasons you cite, I think Jamison would have thrived here.
More importantlty, though,
we would have gotten RAY back!!!!
The Wiz let Z go for eating Jamison's contract. They would have done the same for us.$$$$$ was the real issue here, but we would have been real competitive for the rest of KG's contract. Think about it! Butler plus Jamison plus Ray!!! The only downside would have been that we would have been strapped $$$ wise and probably wouldn't have been able to sign Ray back for next year. I still would've done it, and I love Ray.
