My husband and I were searching Cragislist for an ad for tickets for tomorrow.  Yes, I know it's not very legal, but we had a last minute cancellation and are DYING to go.

Well we came in contact with someone selling tickets for $200 for a pair.  My husband spoke with him three times on the phone cementing the deal, then met him 20 miles away.  He watched him count the money, they shook hands and all was done.

About 30 minutes after he got home, we got a phone call saying that he only paid for ONE ticket and the ad was for $200 EACH TICKET.

Now, to ensure these tickets were valid, we had a copy of the original purchase receipt scanned and sent to us via e-mail so we have a copy of it.  He is not a season ticket holder, however, he had two tickets for tomorrow's game and eight tickets for Game 6.

We *thought* we did all of our homework to make sure this was legit, as we've bought many tickets before on Craigslist with no problem.

Well now, he has been harassing us via text message and blowing up both of our phones telling us we are now out $200 and he canceled the tickets.

Is that even possible?

We checked the website and it said if he were to file a police report as a season ticket  holder he would be able to cancel the tickets, however he is not a season ticket holder.

He just sent us a text message saying he knows our address, which is correct and his father is a police officer and gave it to him.  He has our money, but we checked and the ticketing offices are only open Monday through Friday...so what could he really do?

I am FLABBERGASTED!!!   Please, for the love of Rajon Rando, what should we do here?!

Wow...I feel sorry for you. I've never purchased anything off CL...but I have heard bad things about it....not sure how the ticket cancellations work...so, I can't advise on that...however, save those text messages....you might need them if this guy really wants to pursue some course of actions....he can't harrass you like that....anyway, I hope you and your husband get to watch the game....and I also hope that this resolves quickly....and here is your second TP.

PS: If that ad is still up...you should print it before he takes it down....something to blow off his false claim.

Thanks so very much,  we have saved all printed and electronic information but I just don't know if we should show up to the game tomorrow or not.  Is he bluffing????

It's 12:30 and he is STILL texting us both.

I really hope someone experienced comes along.

$200/ticket is an obscene price. The market rate is ~$40.

Well...not for these particular tickets I hate to say...we got a great deal, that's why I feel we were getting "scammed" but in the long run, I just think this guy was either high or didn't know how to count?!

Seriously!!!!!

So really, I highly doubt he would cancel tickets that cost him so much money, but I fear he will show up tomorrow and if so...what then????

You're such a doll, thanks so much!!!

Unfortunately I just called and they were closed, I got the security guard who said to call back tomorrow at 10am.

I'm soooooo sad, I don't really know my rights here and whether or not we should show up.

This guy's dad is a cop...so like...are we pretty much screwed?

Okay, I understand this topic sucks and is probably taboo and illegal on this site......

But please guys, last I checked 17 people at once were looking at this thread.

Should we show up or not?  I have such a knot in my stomach right now.........I want to cry and scream at the same time.  I know after this is all over, I will be definitely doing something....but what about tomorrow???

What would YOU guys do??? (besides buy tickets earlier , which by the way a wedding was canceled..haha long story)  I got SO excited to go and almost bought tickets from someone else for thirty bucks more and wish I had but didn't and now I'm stuck in this predicament.

What would you do????????

Poppy,

I happen to sell Celtics tickets (and many people on this site might know from the tickets forum) so I think that I know a little on this topic.

Season ticket holders can "print" tickets from the celtics website as many times as they want. Each time that they print, the previous tickets become invalidated.

Were your tickets hard tickets or printed out tickets (on regular paper)?

I know this guy says that he's not a season ticket holder, but there are 2 ways that he can still mess you over:

1. If they were pdf tickets, then he can just resell or use those same tickets and just tell the person to get there before you do....once those barcodes are scanned in, any other copy of the tickets will be rejected at the turnstile.

2. If he really is a STH or he bought it from a STH, he can get the reprinted tickets and invalidate yours.

My advice would be to go to the game a little bit early and try to get in with the tickets that you have. If you get rejected, you can always find a scalper on the street. Tickets will be much cheaper right before the game, especially with the way the Cavs blew them out last game...

If you don't like buying from actual "scalpers" on the street, you could go to a nearby internet cafe and go online to stubhub. They should have tickets up until tipoff and again tickets will be pretty cheap. They will give you directions to their nearby location where you can pick up the tickets (its run by stubhub). Or you could buy from the Celtics ticketexchange, but you would have to be able to print the tickets out yourself.

But my best advice would be to just buy from me next time and you won't have all of these problems :)

Get there early explain the whole thing because he'll probably do the same to some else. If you can't get in make sure the scalper can't use his reprinted tickets through the cops.

you can still get tickets in front.

Have a wonderful game!

Beware of Craigslist...I ended up in small claims court because of Craigslist  when I sold my jetski on there...the guy came after me and said it was broken  and threatened my entire family...I ended up winning the case but the stress involved  was not worth the 5G I got outta the jetski

If I were you, I would try to go to the game ,he could be throwing empty threats on you...if the tix are rejected you call the local cops in his town, you print the emails that were exchanged. If the cops dont want to get involved then you take his tail to small claims court   and swing by an internet cafe to buy some last minute tix on Ace or stubhub . Sorry your going through all of this, some people are just crooks.

If you show up 1st and the cops believe you, you'll be seeing the game. Just be straight up and you should be fine!
