After watching the Bruins beat the Flyers last night and then spent the rest of the night on Celticsblog, I got to thinking that it's very possible for the city of Boston to pull something that had never been done before.
If the Boston Celtics win the NBA Championship and the Boston Bruins win the Stanley Cup, the city of Boston could become the first city in American sports history to win the both winter sports titles in the same season. Not only that but the TD Garden would become the only building to have it's two winter professional sports teams win the championship in the same year.
The city of Boston and the old Boston Garden was the first city and building to attempt the dual championship. In 1956-57 the Celtics won their first championship ever while the Bruins lost the Stanley Cup. The very next year, Boston almost did it again but this time both teams lost in their respective Finals.
In 1971-72, the city of New York gave it a try at Madison Square Garden, but both the NY Knicks and the NY Rangers lost in the NBA and Stanley Cup Finals respectively. Then it was Boston's shot at attempting it again in 1973-74. The Celtics were able to hold up their end of the bargain but the Bruins were not.
In 1979-80, yet another city and building attempted the double championship attempt. This time the city of Philadelphia and the Spectrum. The Flyers and the 76ers, unfortunately for Philly fans were as successful in their attempt as the city of New York was in 1971-72. Neither team could win it all.
It's come close recently as well as in 1991-92 Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls won the NBA title while the Chicago Blackhawks played for and lost the NHL title Both teams played in what is now the United Center. The feat was almost accomplished again in 1993-94 with the New York Rangers winning the cup and the New York Knicks unable to take the Larry O'Brien Trophy while both playing in MSG and in 2002-03 as well as the New Jersey Devils won the Cup and the New Jersey Nets went to the NBA Finals but lost to the Lakers. Both teams played at the then Continental Airlines Arena.
It would be so very cool to see the Bruins and Celtics both win their sport's last game played that year, in the same building just days apart. It would once again cement the city of Boston's place as the City of Champions in the 21st century. And given that the Boston College Eagles won the NCAA Hockey National Title and play at the Garden in the Beanpot, dare we say this could be a triple header championship winter for the city of Boston?
