So after last night's tough loss, Dirk actually expressed thoughts that seemed to hint at leaving the Mavs. Wow.

It seems unlikely to me, but if he does, where does he go? Well, if he wants to win, not New Jersey, New York, or Chicago. The logical choice, it seems to me, is Miami.

Imagine him paired with Wade. As I understand it, Miami could then sign still another max guy, or near-max guy. I'm not sure that makes much sense, since most of the bigger names available would largely be redundant with Dirk--Bosh, Stoudemire, and Boozer--or Wade--Joe Johnson.

What makes more sense is to fill out their roster with lower-priced guys who would work around the big two: people like Haslem, Camby, Raja Bell, Mike Miller, Rasual Butler, Harpring. Or even players unlikely to find great offers elsewhere, like McGrady and our very own Ray. There are lots of great finds in this free-agent class besides the big four or five.

For Miami, signing Dirk makes way more sense than signing Stoudemire, Bosh, or Boozer. Surround him and Wade with some defensive-minded veterans and a perimeter threat or two, and you've got an instant title contender.

Wow, that seems almost too good to be true. Personally I can't stand Mark Cuban so my dream is obviously to see his franchise player leave him for a team that I could actually root for.

I actually don't mind the Miami Heat becoming a title contender again and after the Mavs have repeatedly won countless regualr-season games and then being ousted in anti-climactic fashion from the playoffs (remember when they lost to the eighth seeded Golden State Warriors in the first round the year after they lost the NBA Finals) I think it is time to either get Dirk Nowitzki some better role-players (again) or just trade him.

Wouldn't mind seeing Nowitzki in Celtic-Green, though I doubt we'd be willing to trade for him until later in his career.

I would love to see it happen but I don't see Dirk leaving Dallas.

I think a Wade + Dirk two man game would be the most unstoppable offensive combination in the league ... especially in the pick and roll late in fourth quarters.

Well, Lebron and Dirk wouldn't be a bad combination either.  I think Lebron and Wade are basically the same player, except Lebron is a SF and Wade is a SG.  But in either situation, Dirk is probably the best wingman you can draw up, other than KG or Duncan in their prime (since they would be better defensively).

Bosh would be better than Dirk as a number 2 option, but since he wants to be "the man" I don't see that happening.

Actually, I think Dirk probably sees himself the same way, so all of this is probably just academic.

Dirk would probably be the one free agent outside of Lebron that could turn Miami into an instant contender (assuming they could also sign a decent-but-not-great supporting cast).

It would be really interesting, if they had the choice between Bosh and Dirk.  Do you go with the better all-around player in Dirk, or do you take the great young player who is almost (but not quite) on Dirk's level?

Unlike Pierce, I could see Dirk opting out of his $21.5 million contract because I think he could still get a max level contract out there. No whether he would leave the Mavs and Dallas, where I think he has always been very happy, I'm not to sure. Let's not forget, Cuban spoils the crap out of his players and Mav players get the best of the best regarding team extras.

Wade and Dirk in Miami would make huge sense for building a future championship within a short time. Ultimately opting out and demanding a sign and trade to a contending team might be the smartest option.

Dirk for Pau Gasol??

Dirk for Pau Gasol??

Hmm...  I don't know if the Lakers would do that.  Perhaps.

How about:  Bynum to Toronto, Bosh to Dallas, Dirk to LA?

I think the Dirk/Gasol combo would be unstoppable.

The problem with Cuban is that he is micro-managing; he is way to involved, sitting behind the bench yelling.
I think the Mavs would do a lot better if he give his players a little space.

This is really interesting and works for everyone.

Caveats -

I'm not sure Dallas would ever TRADE Dirk. He's basically Pierce but in a Mavs uniform. Cuban loves him.

Bosh seems really averse to playing in his hometown. For whatever reason.

Dirk to the Thunder...he and Durant would be unstoppable together (or they'd get in each other's way...)

More help then what he has now? I think they have a good roster that’s should have done a lot better.

I think if the Mavs bring back the same team, they may do better.  The mid-season trade shook things up a bit, and they never really assimilated Butler and Haywood as well as they could have.

I'd prefer Lebron to go to Dallas than Dirk to go to Miami. The only superstar I can stand less than Lebron is Wade. I hope he doesn't get help like Dirk.

BTW - any reason to think Dirk has that much more in the tank than Pierce? Drafted same years, both take a lot of abuse, and have been "the man" on their teams. Dirk is a better shooter (I think) and taller - so those traits tend to keep you in the league, but it seems like people think Dirk has 5-6 more years and Pierce is already done - not sure why it should be such a big gap.
