In view of the Herald article today about the players still wanting Doc to be the coach next year, I got to thinking...

Could Doc have floated this rumor intentionally to the media as motivation to the players? I think it would be hard to walk away as the coach if your team had just won the championship. Maybe the players feel that would be the case and Doc knows it - maybe he figures "If I threaten to leave, they'll win the title just to make me stick around another year."

Dumb idea? Probably. Players shouldn't need this kind of ploy for motivation. An easier explanation (as opposed to lack of motivation) is simply that they're just not as good as we all wanted them to be. (Although I'm still holding out hope for the playoffs!).

Didn't the article say Doc talks about this sorta thing every year, though?

Maybe.  Of if not to motivate them, to at least draw the limelight off their woes and on to him.

maybe it's to deflect attention away from the team...
