The team has really started to look, well, like the team at the beginning of the year and, dare I say, a bit like the championship team. This despite last night's loss to Utah.  I have been among the doom and gloom camp the last 1-2 months, and even started a thread predicting that we would lose in 4-5 games in second round.  (Feel free to call me out!!)  Do I feel differently today?  As Sarah Palin would say, "you betcha."  The source of my new found faith and optimism?

1.  The energy level of the team has picked up considerably the last week plus. On the boards, the defensive rotations (they are stepping into the passing lanes much better), and the offensive sets.  Yes we are a little older than two years ago. But the demise of this team, based on age, may have been greatly exagerated, none more so than posters like yours truly.

2.  Guys are starting to accept their roles, or redefine them better.  Example 1: Perk. He seems to accept that he is never going to be an asset on offensive. He just simply lacks the athleticism to be that guy. He has re-focused on defense, shot blocking, and rebounding. This is the guy we want. Example 2: Glen (Don't Call me Big Baby) Davis. He recognizes a lack in this team, an energy guy, and has designated himself as that guy.  Don't need to tell you how aggressive he has been on both ends, especially the boards. And he has replaced Posey as the guy most likely to risk his body to draw the offensive foul. He is not a flopper like Varajao. Glen has very quick feet and good basketball IQ in this respect. Love it.

3.  The bench is really showing signs of being able to make runs in short spurts, which can spell the difference between winning and losing. This is led mostly by the possiblilities of the two new guys -- Nate and Finn -- who are capable of hitting several threes in a row, turning a 1 point lead into a 10 point lead in 90 seconds.  Eddie who??

4.  The return of Paul to health.  Pierce is finally healthy again, and looks like th Paul of old, capable of creating a high percentage shot, and drawing a foul, whenever needed.  Welcome back, Paul.

5. Ray is having a great year. Is it me, or is Ray having maybe his best all around year for the Celtics? Maybe not statistically. But, he seems much more consistent, and confident, from the 3, is more able to draw fouls where he is deadly, and is able and willing to go to the hole more. His age simple is not an issue.

6.  We are going to get enough from KG to make us compete for the championship. Of the big 3, he has declined the most, partly from injury, maybe the miles as well. But I feel he still brings a deadly mid range jumper, and also still quarterbacks the defense with the same intensity. Even last night.

7. Sheed can be our PJ Brown plus.  I figure if he can provide the same role PJ did, with a little added offensive prowess, that is enough for this team to compete for the title.  I don't expect much more than that from him. With Nate and Fin on the second unit, both of whom are great 3 point guys, it lessens the need for Sheed (in his head, hopefully) to roam out there, where he can be a momentum killer.  Stay low, bro.

8.  The hunger is starting to return to these guys. You can see it. I know this is an odd time to make this post, after the loss last night, but I really feel very good about what I have seen of late.

Tp. This was quiet a 'feel good' type of a read, and good to know you have started believing in the team again.

In last night's loss it was 2 things which caused us to lose the game.

1.) We need to stop leaving 3 pt shooters open. Once they get hot from beyond the arc then its tough to cut down the lead and win the game. Last night we allowed them a bunch of open shots in the 2nd half which led them to gain some momentum.

2.) I really don't want to see Rondo let anyone get to his head again. I know he is still young and all, but we are the type of a team that likes to get into the opponents' head, and we can't allow our guy to take a dose of our own medicine.

TP footey! Glad to hear all these positive facts, coming from a guy who buried the team months ago. It only shows that a lot of fans overreacted and that, even we if we were terrible for weeks (months?), we were due to get back to our early form with a little (a lot, actually) health and some time. The loss to Utah wasn't a worrying one. The team is starting to play better and better and if it peaks at the right time, we really will be in a good position for the playoffs.

We can't expect to win literally every one of our regular season away games even though we are banking on trying to win at least 1 playoff series without home court advantage. I might be difficult for us to go in and convert every other NBA team to the Celtic's brand of basketball, I mean it's not like we're the Harlem Globtrotters  ;)

Any game in which the Celtics are killed on the glass for an extended period of time (Okur in the 2nd half). Does not make me feel better.

I can accept losses where the C's shoot poorly or losses where the other team is on fire. Losses in which the team is sloppy with the ball or they do not go after the boards hard enough really make me angry. Being sloppy with the ball is a mental error that a veteran team shouldn't make. Getting killed on the glass more often than not is an effort problem which should never happen in sports (yes I'm looking at you Sheed).

Those problems are the problems that bother me the most about bad basketball. Unfortuneately those are the two biggest problems plaguing this team. In my opinion when the Celtics outrebound their opponent they win, when they keep their turnovers down they win (not sure where I could get stats on this). I feel better anytime they do those things and feel poorly anytime they don't.

TP, glad you're feeling better :)
Actually, last night I didn't think they played all that badly- in the third qtr, if a few of the C's misses went in and a few of the Jazz outside shots didn't, it might have been a different story. Not saying the Jazz didn't deserve the win, but the C's played well IMO. Except for one guy who I won't name for fear of being called a "basher".
It's amazing how good everyone else on the team looks when KG and PP are healthy!!!, or at least 90% healthy.

Can I nominate this for Post of the Year? TP, Footey.

The Role Acceptance part is right on point. It does seem like Glen and Perk finally accepted their role's. Credit to Doc. But the biggest difference so far is the Captain. He's finally healthy, and playing HOF basketball again. Call me crazy: I think We haven't seen the best of KG yet. The explosion is somewhat back. He's grabbing rebounds at the height point once again. Credit to Doc again for keeping Kg's minutes down even when it got tough.

Another thing I thought of after that Utah games was that maybe the Celtics so so home record is on us, the fans. Did you see how rabid those Jazz fans are. We need to step it for the home games. We need to influence the home games with rabid participation! I hope the garden is so loud on wednesday that the nuggets can't hear themselves think.

Footey -- Great Post (TP).

If time were to have stopped still at the end of the first half in Utah, there would very few hold-outs on the too old, too hurt, too slow, no effort bandwagon.   Unfortunately, they went ahead and played the third quarter.

But... the standard excuse does apply: 3rd game in 4 nights in 3rd different city far, far from home.  They ran out of gas and Rondo ran into a buzz-saw last night that did get into his head.

As you point out though -- tons of good news on the road trip adding to the upturn in optimism sparked by the recent blowout wins.

I agree with your analysis, and will emphasize one concern: Is the defense capable of turning up a notch and maintaining effort, intensity and skill throughout a game and throughout a series?   KG at 80%, or even 90%, is a huge difference than KG at 100%.  Defensively, I really think he needs to be at the top of his game, and at his highest level of intensity.

BTW, I agree with looking at Rasheed as PJs replacement -- that, to me, is an upgrade. Forget his contract; for the time being, it doesn't matter.

One loss is certainly no reason to panic, but we most assuredly reverted back to the bad habit that have torpedoed some of the regular season.

It's not my nature as a coach to ever feel better after a loss.
