I have followed the NBA a long time and the one thing that has confused me is the salary cap and what teams can do with the various types of expiring contracts and options.

As I have all but written off this season (don't hate me, I just think there are better teams)I am interested in what we can expect in the off season.

What kind of players will realistically be in the discussion regarding the C's who would be valueable to keep etc. We'll have another crap draft position so that is not a factor unless we want to spend another here wondering why a seemingly clever pick by danny is seeing no court time

Just interested to know your guys thoughts

is there cause for optimisim or even excitement this off seasn?

At this point, Danny's primary offseason options are:
* MLE --> use on 1 pretty good player or split among lesser players
* Vet Min --> signing guys to the minimum.  I'm not optimistic that they'll find someone as productive as Shelden again next year.
* FA's --> Resign their own provided the raise isn't so large that they need to use the MLE to do so.
* Trades --> any of the 6 players under contract that are deemed upgradeable either as a short term investment for another run at the title or as a long term investment for building a future contender.

That's about it.
I doubt a trade is in the works since:
* PP is most likely a Celtic for his career
* BBD has limited interest elsewhere in the league.  He couldn't get a taker last year when he looked like an asset after the playoffs.
* Perk is a young, solid center on a team-friendly contract for next year.  Most likely to be resigned since good, young centers aren't a dime a dozen.
* KG has a killer contract for 2 years.
* Sheed is just toxic right now.  Can't see someone wanting him for 2 years.
* Rondo is the future and going nowhere.

I could see Danny:
* resigning Ray to 7-8 mill for 2 years
* resigning Nate for 2-3 years provided he doesn't need the MLE to do so.
* resigning either Daniels or TA depending on which one is more affordable for 2 years.
* possibly resigning Finley if the contract is affordable and for 1 year.
* I think Shelden is gone because he can get more than the vet min elsewhere.  I don't think Danny will dip into the MLE to resign him.
* Scal and Landry are gone unless Danny absolutely needs roster filler and can't get anyone else for the vet min.
* I think Danny if Danny pulls off those moves in the offseason, adds a 1st and 2nd rounder to the roster, he'll use the full MLE to get a player like Travis Outlaw that can defend and score while filling in a few positions.  The other likely option is athletic 4/5 player that could produce what we hoped Sheed would produce and give us more than Baby and Shelden are giving us.

Thanks for breaking it down although I have to say I am not at all excited by the prospect of having the same team another year older

I think the excitement level for next year's roster is really dependent on what they do in the playoffs this year.  If they get it together like they've been saying they will and get at least to the ECF and play well, next year isn't necessarily all doom and gloom with this roster since Danny should be able to bring back the core rotation with the probably exception of 1 or 2 of the backup wings.  The plus is that Danny will have the full MLE to hopefully improve that spot. He might draft someone that could contribute (not likely for a pick in the 20's and with Doc coaching) but fortunately with that roster a rookie wouldn't be required or expected to contribute right away.

then again if they get creamed in the playoffs, the offseason and next year will be ugly.

Sure don't hope for that last one. Seriously.

Let's just go and be the underdog, and turn this into a Cinderella story.
