I didn't know about the Crumpler signing. That's a decent signing. He isn't what he was but he will be a great red zone target who's good hands and size should make for a viable TE option in those circumstances. He's well past his prime but a good signing.

Jason Taylor I'm torn on. I don't think he's a great option as a DE in a 3-4 and I don't think he has the speed and coverage ability anymore to be a 3-4 OLB. He is going to be 36 years old this year afterall. I would rather draft a kid and give him that slot and develop him but we'll see.

If they do sign Jason Taylor it will be as a 3-4 olb, he's not big enough to play a 3-4 end (they are usually 6'3+ and around 300 lb). He would come in to rush the passer in passing situations.

I would be satisfied with outlinebacking corps that added Taylor and Graham or Kindle in the draft. Or maybe two outside rookies and Taylor.

As for Crumpler, he will bring the toughness and good blocking that the Pats need. He was very helpful in Johnsons huge season. I still think we grab a tight end either in the 2nd or the 4th.

I think the Pats are going to bring in some serious talent in the draft and don't be surprised if they trade a 2nd for someone who can really help (Greg Olsen aka G-Reg or another good player).

So now that the draft is done the season has officially started I say.

It is definitely time to bring in Alan Faneca for a workout. Let Darth Belichek be like "Yessss. Let the hatred flow throoouugghh you. Indeed you are powerful. Now STRIKE down the Jets! Do it!"

If it works out cut Stephen Neal, and hope he doesn't sign within the division

It's unfortunate that we we are only half way through the offseason though.

I like Neal, but he is headed for the pasture soon.  So too is Faneca.  But it might be worth while to see what Faneca has left.

I think overall, we fared quite well in this year's draft, and Bill came up with some amazing trade stuff ... not quite sure how he does it sometimes. ;)

The Pats had a wicked good draft, probably the best since the 2003 draft. BB is still an absolute genius when it comes to building a team through the draft. Not so much via free agency. I really think this draft puts the Pats over the top and the clear cut favorite to win the AFC and return to the Super Bowl.

I'm pretty happy by the draft but I'm gonna to hold off jubiliation and high expectation until I see this revamped defense on the field.  We still have an awfully young & somewhat inexperienced secondary and I'm not sold that our pass rush needs have been addressed.

The good news it that there is still another round of FA/cuts that can benefit this team.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of T.O. - I think B2 could deal with his ego, and Welker's return is not looking good for anytime soon ... what an awesome set of targets for Tom!

I thought Welker was well ahead of schedule?  Which still could mean it is not looking good any time soon  >:(.

I may be the only one that really cares but one of my alltime favorite Patriots retired, David Patten.  Yes, I actually own an 86 Patten jersey.  The guy was a warrior and a huge contributor in the early days of the Pats mini-dynasty. Sad news to me but not entirely unexpected.  He was a long shot to make the roster this season.

From the Globe:

Quote
Bill Belichick is announcing the retirement of David Patten as we blog this.

"We have a lot of guys that work hard," Belichick said. "David sets the pace as far as work ethic."

Patten was signed this offseason by the Patriots, returning after spending 2009 out of football. He won three Super Bowl rings with New England earlier this decade.

Patten caught 165 passes and 2,513 yards and 16 touchdowns in his four years, and is of course best known for his leaping touchdown catch in Super Bowl XXXVI. That's in the picture to the left.

More in a little bit.

Ty Warren placed on the Injured Reserve today ... Burgess reinstated. Hate losing Ty ... really bad news. We'll see what Damian Lewis and Gerrard Warren can do.

Story is here.

Nice pre-season win in their first game, though ... looked a lot more synchronous than I expected.

I guess that's football for you. You know there will be injuries to key players -- you just hope it's not THE key player.  Amazing that with the random nature and frequency of major injuries to key players that teams like NE, Indy, Pittsburgh are so consistently in the mix (it may have something to do with their quarterbacks ;)).  Credit to coaching staff for developing systems that can continue despite the losses and front office for building depth and versatility within the roster.   They'll survive losing Warren, but they may be awfully young on D this year.
