Danny's job ALWAYS has to be to make the team better.  True, he can do present or future planning, but he can't justify keeping a player because he wants (or think fans want) to see him retire in green.

I have not given up on the core of this team -- and apparently, based on DA's trade deadline decisions, he hasn't yet either.  Perhaps that will change if the C's continue their downward trend and make a quick exit from the playoffs. But, if the C's get it back together to at least be competitive with the big boys, DA's best bet continues to be to play for the present.  It is not impossible for him to tweak the current roster in a way that makes them a better team next year.  It may involve a bold move or 2, but the core is still stronger than all but a handful of NBA teams.

I'm still waiting to see how this season plays out.  Unlike a couple weeks ago though, I am mostly concerned with Pierce rather than KG. Other than a great game against Charlotte (it was Charlotte, right?), he has been abysmal.  And Pierce CAN improve dramatically, and this will change the team dramatically.

If this team needs to blow up next year, Perk is not he player I trade for draft picks.

I would trade KG and Pierce to those lotto teams that built up cap space to sign Lebron (or one of the other stars)

Let's say NJ signs Lebron, but not another star.  Would they trade their 1st (and what ever cap filler needed) to bring in KG to be his number 2?  (a perfect role for KG)

Say the Clippers sign Joe Johnson.  Would they trade their 1st to get a Peirce to go along with Johnson, Kamen, Blake and Davis?

That's the type of deal that would make sense for Boston if they were to blow up the team.

It surprises me that people would rather see this team fall to levels of mediocrity or worse just to have PP retire here.  Would you really pass on a trade that could keep us at a competitive level for years to come and save us from years like the late '90's?  That is some sentimentality.  Sure, PP may be one of the top 5 greatest celtics ever, but he's not even THE greatest celtic ever.  I can see if it were MJ, or Duncan, etc. - a name that defines an entire franchise.  But Paul Pierce?

Why not make the trade, then sign PP for a day like Nomar later in his career???  (or a 10 day contract if thats the minimum legal)

gotta worry about this year's record first
;D tp  Right!  First things first.
Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow is a mystery.
Today is a gift...

Oh... Danny... don't forget to trade expensive aging talent (Paul Pierce, whatever is left of KG, etc.) to teams in the West like Denver and Dallas to overtake the Lakers.  ;)

danny better not trade paul. he needs to be a celtic for life.  i dont care how old and crappy he might be, i want him in green.  i know im speaking with my heart rather than my head, but its truthful nonetheless.

I agree.  Danny may regret that Larry Bird and Kevin McHale retired in green, but I don't.  I don't really care if it means a year or two of extended mediocrity.

I suppose if Pierce forces our hand and won't sign a reasonable deal when his contract expires, that would be different.  However, I'd prefer not to trade him at this point.

As for our record this year, I can't see this team being a sub-500 team.  This same exact team got off to a 23-5 record when they were playing at their best, both physically and mentally.  To describe them as a near-lottery team is, in my mind, not accurate.

There's also the likelihood that KG will be healthier, another season removed from surgery.

Agreed...feel KG is going to make a come back next season like a mad-man(possessed).He can't be satisfied with his overall performance this season so far and from listening to him throughout his time in Boston,he means to honor his commitments to wyc,the team,Danny. Its just a gut feeling but i think he is that type player that will make all his doubters eat their words.Ive always noticed on this board, there have been some who never fully accepted him as a Celtic from the beginning and never fully felt his presence was a good thing.I can't figure out why anyone would want to trade him so fast.In my opinion,he is the main man needed to win a championship, with Pierce. You will not replace his contribution to this team that easy, even with a new superstar next season.tp.

agree, Paul should retire in green unless a bourque like situation comes up that we trade him so he can go out on top
As for the ugly record I don't see it.  healthy all stars no matter what age are still better than some of the teams we've put out there in recent years

I agree with the part in red ... period. Danny needs to do whatever needs to be done to retire Paul Pierce as a Celtic, or there is going to be an immense chorus of voices in an uproar calling for his (Danny's) resignation ... of which I will be the loudest.

There will be an immense chorus in an even bigger uproar calling for his (Danny's) resignation ... when this team stinks again because Danny did not trade every member of the Big Three when he had a chance. I love Paul, Ray, and KG but I don't want to be bad for 5-10 years ever again.

Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.
