Why didn't we sign this guy in the off-season instead of Rasheed?

Sure, he can't hit 25% of the 3's he chucks up from the perimeter, but he can rebound well and finish at the rim with more athleticism than anybody on our team.  He's only 6'8'' but he plays taller than half the bigs on our team because he can actually jump, block out, rebound, and finish inside.

The Magic haven't even used him that much this season, but every time I see him play I can't believe Van Gundy doesn't use him more.  He looks like a shorter Dwight Howard out there at times.

If I could, I'd trade Rasheed straight up for Brandon Bass in an instant.  He's reminds me of a healthy, more athletic Leon Powe.

I see your point and agree, but this kind of thinking is the same line of "why didn't I workout harder in highschool?"

The team wanted more size + length in the paint in order to match up with the bigger Cavs + Lakers teams.

The lack of size off the bench in the 2008/09 season with Leon Powe + Glen Davis was still fresh in the team's minds. They wanted to fix that problem. Hence, Rasheed.

All that length doesn't mean much when he hardly ever plays much down by the basket, and gets personal fouls as often as not when he's defending down there.

I understand why the team thought Rasheed would be a good addition, but they really ought to have given some thought to Brandon Bass.  Bass is pretty much everything this team needs but doesn't have in the frontcourt.

I haven't seen him play much this year but tonight did you see who he was up against? Does he ever get any meaningful minutes at all? Cause seeing him a couple minutes a game against terrible competition isn't exactly the best judge of whether he could help us or not. It's like when Shelden looks good in garbage time.

Bass had a good year last season and played significant minutes for the Mavs.  He's been productive in the minutes he's played for the Magic this year.  Van Gundy just doesn't use him as much because he can't shoot.  He's seeing the light now, though, playing Bass as the primary backup for Rashard.

Whenever I've seen Bass play this year, he's been impressive and productive, regardless of the level of competition.  Bottom line, there's no way he'd be worse than Rasheed has been for us in 20 mpg this season.

Brandon Bass has struggled for the Magic this season.

Bass hasn't been able to learn the team's defensive principles, and, consequently is regularly out of position defensively. SVG regularly has had to take him out of games for missed assignments. His rebounding is also at a career low mark and is comparable to what Rasheed has been doing on the glass. So poor defense + very poor rebounding. Bass has been solid enough offensively ... just hasn't been able to outplay Ryan Anderson (offense) or Marcin Gortat (defense) which there is no shame in.

I'm not saying that Bass is bad player. Not by any means. I don't think his play this season is indicative of his quality, of his ability as a player, at all. I'm just saying that Bass has played very poorly when he's received playing time this year + there are good reasons for SVG not playing him.

Brandon Bass was terrific for the Mavericks last season and is a good reserve player. An excellent two point jump shooter, a good finisher inside, a decent rebounder (below average but respectable) and a good defender.

Well, it doesn't help that Van Gundy has played him 5-10 minutes a game for most of the season.  Hard to get a rhythm that way.

Based mainly on what I've seen of him this season, I would be shocked if he didn't give the Celtics better and more consistent production in the same amount of minutes Rasheed has gotten this year.

I like Bass a lot when I watch him.  He doesn't play a lot because he is supposedly absolutely clueless on defense and can't remember the plays and where he is supposed to be on offense.  I guess this reminds me of Drew Gooden, who always looks very good to my eyes, but coaches never really like the guy.  There is a reason these guys keep changing teams.

Hey, I'd love to have Gooden on the C's.  Don't worry about defense; the Celtics need rebounding and interior scoring first and foremost.

I like Bass, but he'd give us the same overall production that Davis has, but for double the price and at a lot of years.

Team was looking for perk insurance(imo) by going after a guy that can play the center. Perk goes down and the season can still be salvaged since we have Sheed to defend Shaq, Dwight, and Bynum.

BTW, anyone notice that Rasheed's play as of late seems to have turned up a notch. Doesn't mean his shots are falling, but a better defensive effort and easier shot selection to live with.

Brandon Bass wouldn't get stuffed every time he tries to finish inside in traffic.  He's a much better player than Glen.

TP, yes sheed is showing some fire and defensive prowess. The scape goat can no longer be blamed.

if you understand why the team thought sheed would be good, how can u fault them for signing him?!

and how do u know they didnt give thought into bass?  are u behind closed doors to know?
