I think it's clear to me now. If I do achieved stupendous wealth, meaning in the billions, I'll do to the C's what the Steinbremmer family has done with the Yankees.

I'll ask Danny and Wyc to only offer max contracts to Rondo and Durant. Then, I'll offer an annuity to all other players who join the C's at vet's minimum, which pays out at roughly 10 to 15 million per year. This will guarantee us numerous titles from here forth. And I don't feel bad about it.

Kinda reminds me of the Underwear Gnome Business Plan.

Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!

In any case, if you win every year because you're buying players rather than making saavy moves...isn't that kind of defeating the purpose of even playing? I'd rather our titles (assuming there will be more) come with character, you know? Nobody wants to play the videogame on easy.

He's implying that he'd pay all vets the minimum and then compensate them using some financial mumbo jumbo on the side.

However that is against the CBA, so it's not really worth discussing.

It's not possible. But if the Celtics could be like the Yankees and win all the time then I'd be all for it. I'd have no problem with them playing a video game on easy.

It is no different than what the Celts did trading for KG and Ray, or what the Red Sox did with their payrolls.

No one has righteous indignation when their team is winning it all. Only when it is hypotheticals or when talking about other teams.

I think it is definitely different. The Celtics took a huge risk in basically mortgaging their future for a 3 year window at a championship. Its not like the salary wasn't spent to begin with. The C's didn't go out and buy players, they traded real assets for real assets.

But is it? Realize, I'm neither a part of the management nor the ownership of the team. In fact, Wyc wouldn't even approach me with the deal.

I'd simply state that anyone, who's willing to come to the Celtics at veteran's minimum, will get an annuity from XYZ Capital and Partners.

Then, ASAP, Boozer, Stoudamire, and others will come out of the woodwork, have their managers talk to Danny, and then, as soon as Danny is 'ok' with them joining at Vet's min, then my boys will show up (with no prompting from the C's management), and make 'em a deal at XYZ. They'll each get $10-18 million per year, for the length of their contract w/ the C's, with a year or two extra, just for good faith. It's a deal which no one will turn down since they'll always be looking for ways to get Danny to *extend* their stays in Boston, thus a way of getting me to keep the annuity program going, as long as possible.

Please... Never compare the C's to the Yankees again...

How about this, If you became a multi-billionaire and bought the C's you would get them a championship just about every year.

Even though with the salary cap this isn't possible.

They are both the most successful and storied franchise in their sports.

I know but I don't want the Yankees and any of my favorite teams in the same sentence unless it is the Red Sox, obviously.

Baseball does have the longest regular season of professional ball sports so it's nice that teams like the Yankees have some sort of way to compensate their players/fans for such long seasons, however extravagant their method of doing so may seem strange to the average baseball fan or other 'less fortunate' baseball clubs.

As far as the NBA is concerned it would appear as though the Denver Nuggets have the advantage provided they are all healthy by the end of this season even after their loss to the Lakers yesterday because they  are a young team with loads of athleticism. With the Cavs losing Shaq for likely the rest of the season the Celtics might still have a shot at a title if we can just dominate Dwight Howard and the Magic for the rest of this season (we would probably end up facing them if we make it that far into the playoffs this year). Even if we got to the Finals we'd still have to figure out a way to stop the Nuggets though - even worse if the Lakers somehow make it back because we haven't beaten them at full strength since 2008...

I understand. I hate the Yankees too. I hate all NY sports teams. But they are the best.

But that's the whole point, the owner can't make the team a perennial contender due to the salary cap, however, an independent multi-billionaire, with no ties to the C's, can make it happen.

My money will probably be in a combination of petrochemicals, infrastructure, and hedge fund assets. Thus, there's no real financial incentive for me to buy and run the C's, as a company. I'm simply a loaded fan and thus, want to blow some of my excess, billion dollars(+) per year disposable income stream, on seeing my home team win the title.

Mark Cuban tried throwing money at Dallas and it didn't work. He was the only owner I remember who didn't seem to care about losing a ton of money, so long as he had fun. He didn't have fun when he ended up a low playoff seed while holding a load of mediocre contracts.
