With Ray being an unrestricted free agent, what should he get for a contract?
Ray would probably get more from another team, but I think he likes Boston.
Would you offer Ray 3 years for 22 million?

7-8 mil a year sounds fair to me.  Maybe a bit more if necessary.  The deal should expire at the same time as KG's deal (maybe with a team option for an additional year).

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
5-8 range.

And I highly doubt he could get more elsewhere.

As long as Rondo is on this team, you need Ray. Its that simple. I'd say its between $6-9mil depends on the market. Teams under the cap who want to contend quickly they could go after Ray.

I think 7-8 million a year is doable, but he's probably going to want 3 years.  Personally (though it's obviously not my money), I'd rather pay him more than that and keep the deal at 2 years.  For instance, I'd prefer 2 years 18 million to 3 years 22 million.  That way he can expire when KG does.  Plus, we'd still have his Bird rights if we wanted him for a third year.

I seriously see almost no reason why he won't be back.  He really only has value to a contender, and no contender is going to have more than the MLE to offer.  The only way I see him getting more than that is if a team like NY misses out on all the big free agents.  They then might offer him a 1 year, 10 million dollar deal or something.  But they won't go beyond 1 year, because they'll want to make a big run again in the summer of 2011.

Still, we probably don't want to low-ball him to the point where he leaves out of spite or that he's disgruntled next year.  But I think retaining him won't be an issue.

No more than 6m per...he is 35 and is confined to being a shooter, he will have good games and bad shooting nights which would probably occur more than the good shooting nights..J R Smith shoots better than him and is younger and makes 6mil per so that should be a good reference point...anything more than that would be an albatross contract.

Exactly.
I don't think its gonna be about money, I think it'll be about years.

I could see a 2 year deal straight up or with a 3rd year team option attached.

Quite frankly, I'd prefer a 1 yr deal, with a 2nd year team option but that's not up to me lol.

I'd give a two year deal, maxing out at $10 million (preferably less).

Not if Doc keeps grinding Ray into the ground. Hey, maybe that's Doc's brilliant strategy to keep Ray's value down next year so we don't have to pay him much: burn the crap out of him, grind him into the ground so he is useless, and we won't have to pay him so much. Brilliant, Doc!

1-2 year deal, don't care how much though as long as they use the full MLE.

LOL. You might have something there. Same way he run him to the ground early this season so he could lower his trade value at the deadline. Doc is so diabolical but he can't outsmart Celticsblog  ;D

Do you ever factor injuries into your evaluations? Before Paul hurt his knee there was little doubt he was our best player. I don't think a knee infection or a sprained foot are going to kill his career.

Ray Allen is worth $6-7 million but I think the Celtics will have to overpay him to keep him to a two year contract. 100% unwilling to give him a third year.

I'm still not sure how interested I am in re-signing Ray. Will wait til the offseason to decide.

I think the question is, who can we sign that is better?  There aren't many guys we can sign for a fraction of the MLE who can get you an efficient 15 - 18 points on a nightly basis.
