"I have a problem with that," Rivers said before Thursday's Lakers-Celtics game at Staples Center. "I loved it three years ago when we did it with Gary Payton if you remember, but now I think it sucks. I think it's a terrible deal."

Rivers and the Celtics traded Payton to Atlanta in March 2005 for Antoine Walker and Payton returned to Boston after being waived by the Hawks.

"I actually do have a problem with that though. We did it, and I'm joking, but I do think [it's a problem]. I don't know what you do [maybe] just not allow them to go back to the same team or whatever. ... I do think that will be changed eventually, but I do have a problem with it."

could not agree with him more, though i am glad he noted that we benefited from the loophole a few years back. it was silly then and it is silly now. never thought i would say this but i also agree with phil jackson.

"They're going to get Ilgauskas back and it's going to be one of those scenarios that we see in the NBA where you ship a player out, you get another player, then your player retires or they pay him off and then he comes back in 30 days," Jackson said. "I don't know what that does for the league. I think that's kind of a weird situation."

i am sure stern will get right on this problem.

I don't understand why they made the rule "30 days" instead of "until the following season."  All that making Z (or Ray Allen, had we been able to do this) wait 30 days does is give them a month to rest their legs. 

If they WANT to fix this, it's the easiest thing in the world to fix.

doc said it the perfect way too. did not criticize the cavs, acknowledged we have benefited from it, said it the perfect way.

I say just make the rule 90 instead of 30 days, and they're ineligible to come back mid-playoffs, the 90 days must be up by the last day of the regular season.  If a guy gets traded, it's possible to come back, but it has to be fairly early in the season, and he has to be willing to forgo 3 months of paychecks to do it.

Stupid, sleazy rule that should be fixed.  Any idea above would at least curb this.

It is a weird loophole.  A team that trades a player can't reaquire him that season in a trade...but can if he's bought out?

The buyout/sign with anyone clause was put in at players' request to make sure a player that was cut could have every opportunity to find work, but it is clearly being exploited for a different purpose with these wink-wink trade deals.  It is clearly little more than a subversion of the CBA now.

On the other hand we haven't thought of the other option -- that is, what prevents another team from speaking to 'Z' during the 30 day period and providing something for him to think about.  What are teams able to offer him after a buyout?  I assume the options are vet minimum, $$ under the cap (for those teams under), or remainders on MLE or LLE.  But, what if another contender in a nice climate (LA, San Antonio, Orlando, Houston) get to Z and convince him to come there.  Isn't that possible? Don't they have 30 days to 'woo' him -- give him the Sheed treatment.

i cannot speak for doc but i have always thought it was stupid. it makes no sense that 2 days after a trade is done, the whole world knows that Z is going to be back in Cleveland in 28 days.

clearly u didnt read the part where Doc says "we did it back then." i mean maybe u should check the quote before posting... and if u think pierce gets as many calls as kobe and lebron then you are clearly smokin crack while watchin the C's. For instance with our last possession last night in LA. Paul clearly was fouled but the refs were swallowing the whistle, as is the case whenever we face an elite team, and the Lakers got the ball. Thats why Im glad the lakers got screwed with that timeout right after it. And I laugh in the face of any laker fan saying they got screwed over last night.
