Position Breakdown:Point Guard: Devin Harris will start, and play the majority of the minutes here. He will play the majority of the time with at least 3 of the other 4 starters, because of his abilities as a facilitator as well as a scorer. Will Bynum will take most of the left overs, rolling primarily with bench players, because Bynum's value lies in scoring, not distributing. Eric Maynor will sop up whats left, and probably play mostly with starters, as he's a better defender/distributor than Bynum.
Shooting Guard: Thabo Sefelosha will start, and play about just under half the available minutes. He'll play when there are other scorers on the court, and when defense is a priority. He'll play more heavily when the opposing team has a top tier scorer at the 2, and less time when the other shooting guard is less of a threat. Wes Matthews will be the primary other player at the 2, due to his ability to score both from deep and get to the hole. Devin Harris also will get some minutes here throughout the game, mostly when Will Bynum has the point.
Small Forward: Omri Casspi will start, and play most of the minutes. He's shown a lot of promise this season, he's been a decent defender (for a rookie) and shown considerable hustle. More than that he's been a spectacular outside shooter for most of the season, and when he slumps he's still better than most of the league from deep. As he gets better, he'll probably earn more minutes. Ersan Ilyasova will be his primary backup, and while he'll give up some speed to opposing SF's he'll have size and strength on most of them too. Ersan can also hit a long ball, and he'll go to the hoop if he has to. He's also a very good tough defender. Dorrell Wright and Thabo Sefelosha will take up the rest of the minutes, according to who needs to be defended.
Power Forward: Luis Scola will start here, but much like Casspi at the 3, he'll play just over half the minutes. Also like Casspi his primary backup will be Ersan Ilyasova. Scola will be asked to do everything he does in Houston now, but not much else. He plays good team defense, he rebounds well, and he's able to score either from back to the basket post moves or from mid-range jumpers. He's a tough minded player too, and should be a steading force for Brook Lopez while they're out there together. Ilyasova will be in when the Nets want to run, and will stretch the floor with his shooting. Casspi and Wright will play much the same role for sparse minutes. The other player minding the 4, Songaila, will be a good defensive player in the rotation, and can hit a midrange shot.
Center: Brook Lopez will start and play over 30 minutes a game here. He's really got star potential, but right now we'll settle for his 19 points and 10 rebounds a game. Scola will be his primary reliever, and that will mostly be when the tempo needs to be picked up. David Andersen will sop up whats left.
Team Strengths
Rebounding: The team has a pair of excellent rebounders in the post with Scola and Lopez. Beyond that though Ilyasova and Casspi are both capable rebounders in their own right however. The thing that brings us into elite status as far as the league goes though is Thabo Sefolosha. He's the best rebounding guard in the league, and thus leads all guards in rebounds per 48 minutes. That means in our starting lineup we've got 3 premier rebounders. All the guys in my rotation for SF, PF, and C are adequate rebounders at worse, and elite at best.
Defense: Sefolosha is one of the best defending guards in the league. Devin Harris, before this horrible season, was also a great defender at the point. In the interest of optimism I'm going to blame that on a general lack of moral in New Jersey. Casspi might not be an elite defender, but he held Paul Pierce to shooting 5-15 in Sacramento not a week ago. He's a youth with gusto and the will to hustle, and teams like mine need that. Lopez is capable of anchoring the defense, and is currently 7th in the league in blocks per game. He's a good helpside defender in the prime of his athleticism. Luis Scola isn't particularly athletic, but he's crafty, he's smart, and he's got heart. Maybe due to his Argentinian flair, he's also not against taking a hard charge. Ilyasova and Songaila are both capable defenders, although Ilyasova can get outmatched by bigger 4's.
Three Point Shooting: Casspi, Wright, Ilyasova, Mattews, and even Sefolosha are all shooting at around 35% or better for the season. Even Devin Harris has shown previously that he's a capable shooter with the longball. This means that at times, positions 1-4 can be a real threat from deep. My team doesn't need to live or die from the 3, but they're going to have nights when teams won't know what hit them.
Post Scoring: Scola and Lopez are both excellent scorers in the post. Lopez, because of his size can usually get wherever he wants in the post, and is very able from there. Scola, because of his strength and energy has much the same situation. On the bright side though both guys are also able to hit a midrange shot. Also because my primary backup at the 4 is Ilyasova, and players like him, whoever is playing next to him, whether it's Scola or Lopez, won't have to worry about double teams, so they should have room to work.
Versatility: We can go big, we can go small, we can go fast, we can go strong, and we're not short for fresh legs. Many players on my roster made their bones in the NBA playing dual positions, and they'll be asked to do that here. If a team wants to run, we can run. If we want to slow it down, we can do that too.
Projection/VisionI made this team much in the mold of the current Houston Rockets. In that same vein, I see this team very much a playoff team. I don't know that they'll get past the first round this season, but they're going to be a tough out for whichever unlucky squad draws them.
That's not the biggest reason people should cringe in the east though. The only guy long in the tooth on the Nets squad is Billy Thomas, and he's mostly there to help along Wes Matthews. After him Luis Scola and David Andersen are both 29, and still have some prime years left. But beyond Scola the heart and soul of the rotation is very young, and will only get better.
On top of that we've got one of the lowest payrolls in the league, in a year when there are going to be lots of FA's coming up next summer. Due to the rules of our fantasy draft, none of the top guys (Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Johnson, etc..) will be available, but that doesn't mean we can't get better. This year, the playoffs, next year...THE WORLD!!!!!!
Alright, that's it. If you read it this far, I'm proud of you. I tried to build a team that can compete today and contend tomorrow. I think I accomplished that.
