And do you think that Martin is a good enough player for Ray (and his contract) and BBD?  I don't.

I do.  There's a legitimate debate about who helps us more this year, although I think it's close.  In the future, though, Martin will be a much more valuable player than Ray, and he's signed to a reasonable (albeit fairly long) contract.

Martin is an elite scorer.  He's a poor defender and is often injured, but I think he's worth gambling on.  Very few players can score as consistently as he does.

Out of all the names that were constantly being floated around the past few weeks (Ellis, Hinrich, Martin, etc...), I thought Martin would've been the best return the Celtics could get.  Of course, we would've had to swallow Nocioni's contract which is a debate in itself.

From a talent/age/contract standpoint, I thought Martin would've been our best fit but even then, there would've been the injury concerns.

I think Martin with the right PG has league leading scorer potential in this league

I would also take the chance on him going forward because all his injuries have been of the minor variety

In 2007-08 it was a groin injury

In 2008-09 it was an ankle injury

In 2009-10 it was a wrist injury

It's not like he has a chronic situation in an area so for me that bodes well though it can also be argued that his slight build makes him more prone to injury due to the nature of the game

I think he is a young difference masking type of player Danny should have been trying to move Ray for if he was available

And I am willing to admit he probably pursued Martin but couldn't get it done though I am of the interpretation that that might be because of reluctance on the Celtics end to get things done and not necessarily the Kings end, though many here believe it might be the other way around

But the Kings didn't just give him away with other contracts, which is what we'd have needed to happen to get him.

There's kind of two different arguments going on. PLamb, you're saying the fact that Martin was traded is proof he was available and you're asking why Danny didn't want to get him.

Well, every player in the league is available. Even Lebron. Would Cleveland say "no" to Durant, Jeff Green, and Westbrook? Probably not, considering they may lose him for nothing.

McGrady vs. Ray is a complete wash; from Sac's perspective they just want the expiring deal. Landry is way better than Davis. So that's the deal Sac took.

I guarantee Ainge could have gotten Martin by including Rondo and topping Houston's offer. There was so much smoke, it's essentially fact that Ainge was in talks with Sacramento. So yeah, Martin was available...but not for what Boston could reasonably give.

KG's knee has nothing to do with PLamb's post, nor mine.  The idea of trading Ray Allen wasn't to get a piece to win a championship.  It was to acquire a young player who would otherwise be un-acquirable.  No one move would ensure the Celtics to be a championship team in future years.. you can only make one move at a time and hope the sum of the moves results in a championship caliber team.  So far, our chance to make that one big move seems to be passing.

That second sentence is PRECISELY the point: this wouldn't get a piece to win a championship.
Long term, if this team is done, we are much better tanking in 2011-12, getting a nice draft pick and having enough cap space to sign a max contract (which at this point could potentially be dwight howards, durant, rose, etc).

Oh, and I think that pretty much everyone around the league thinks Landry is much, much better than BBD.
