Straight salary dump. Save 3 million this year, and 11 million next year. They've been in the red for like 3 years straight now. They need to cut costs wherever they can. They also take back some young cheap talent in Douglas, Walker, and Giddens. Who knows, maybe they could catch lightning in a bottle. Also, I'm pretty sure the Knicks would be able to substitute the expiring contracts of Harrington or Hughes for that of Curry.
Why for NYK:
Bring back Glen Davis, a cheap big that could potentially be a role player once they bring in (insert big FA of 2010). Also bring in TJ Ford for this year- they've been looking for a PG all season. They don't have a 1st round draft pick, so they're trying to win as best they can this year. This trade gives them some more talent. Also doesn't use up any parts that they want to use in a trade for Tmac, so they could get that done as well.
Why for BOS:
Bring back legit talent for expendable pieces.
Yes, they'd be taking on additional salary. Yes, they'd have to fill out the roster with a couple vet minimum type guys, but it would all be 12-15 guys anyway. I think these are both things Boston has shown a willingness to do. Also, Boston doesn't give up anything of value except cap relief to IND, and brings back 2 very legit basketball players- a guard that can score in bunches, and a big that rebounds and stretches the floor. Exactly what we need. (Maybe not another big that stretches the floor, but Murphy does shoot the ball better than 'sheed, and he hits the glass better as well)
The Celtics might need to throw in a pick or two to NYK and/or IND to get it done, but I don't see why they wouldn't.
Any opinions? I know that on the surface it seems like a bit of a pipe dream, but it oddly makes sense for all 3 teams involved.
