To put a different spin on this rumor, would you want Ainge to jump in as the third team with expiring contracts of Scal and Giddens, to help get this deal done?

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yhttlaq

McDyess would be a terrific rebounding upgrade over Davis, and has played alongside Wallace in Detroit for years. They'd make a very effective frontcourt tandem off the bench for us.

Why would Chicago want to help Boston?

It's not so much helping Boston, as helping themselves.

They have a potential buyer in SA, but SA wants to offload McDyess' contract in exchange for Thomas, which is a deal-killer for Chicago.

If Chicago could get a draft pick from SA in exchange for Thomas, rather than see him walk and get nothing, why wouldn't they do it?

This is a great deal for Boston.

I mean just a great deal.

Gotcha! I forgot McDyess has some time left on his contract. Hey I'm on board. Lets get rid of Baby to free up front court locker room tension.

Why even help San Antonio?  We should get Ty Thomas ourselves.  Our 1st round picks project to the same range.  We need athleticism in our frontcourt just as badly as San Antonio.

As nice as Antonio McDyess would be, Thomas would make much more of an impact.

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams

SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari

McDyess + Wallace + Davis + Garnett + Perkins is the best frontcourt in the NBA.

Ty Thomas is a transition guy. We could use him, but not as much as we could use McDyess. Not this season anyway.

Good point -- Tyrus Thomas should be the first choice and McDyess the second choice.

Thomas won't make as of an impact in Boston as in San Antonio due to role/minutes but he'd still be a quality reserve player for the Celtics. And I very much like the idea of Perk + Thomas defensively down the road (post big three).

I also like McDyess a lot, but I think you're underselling Thomas' versatility and impact. He's a 3/4 who crashes the boards just as well as Dice in the halfcourt and swarms defensively.  Yes his offense is (or rather should be) limited to transition buckets and offensive boards, but I think his net impact would be significantly greater than Dice.

Put me down as favoring McDyess. He can rebound. He can play with Sheed as they did in DET. Makes BBD expendable for a backup PG. Definitely an upgrade over Sheldon or Scal. Don't see Chicago wanting Ty to stay in the East either.

In regards to this proposed trade, much as I like it, how does it benefit Chicago? According to the Trade Machine it looks like Ty, Scal, and JR each have expiring contracts. Just trying to help make this deal happen.. :)

I'd give up a pick and change for Thomas. As long as the team is willing to pay to retain him.

As soon as I saw this story I was thinking that Danny needs to jump in here and bring McDyess to Boston.  Would have no problem parting with Davis, Scal, Tony the Turnover, Giddens, Shelden, Eddie etc. if we could help the Spurs and Bulls complete this proposed transaction.

On another front, the Spurs are also looking to trade Roger Mason jr., a player that I think at least a few of us wanted two years ago when he signed with San Antonio; clutch shooter, good defender (I think, not sure), better size than Tony Allen.

In addition, Chicago has a back-up point guard who can play defense and shoot (not sure about the playmaking though) - Jannero Pargo.  See where I'm going here?

Lastly, McDyess' contract is hardly favorable, but I think that if we were to acquire him and then somehow win the title this year, he would retire (after all, all he wants to do is get the one thing that has eluded him over his career - a ring).

I'd be willing to sacrifice a first round pick for a rental if that player was a key bench player, and thus give the Celtics an improved shot at a ring this season.

I would be willing to sacrifice two draft picks if the Celtics were planning on keeping Thomas long term -- I think Thomas has very good value to Boston alongside Perkins when the team begins rebuilding. I also think he'd be available on a very good contract relative to his ability + potential.
