First move: We have got to trade Garnett for expiring contracts. As bad as Garnett can play, I think a contender will still welcome him. Cleveland and San Antonio are possibilities.
Boston could send Garnett to Cleveland for Ilgauskas and Jawad Williams (both expiring). Lebron, Shaq, and Garnett is formidable, and I think it guarantees a championship for Cleveland.
Boston could also send Garnett to San Antonio for Ginobili and Finley (both expiring). I don't think the Spurs are quite ready to throw in the towel yet, and a front court of Duncan and Garnett (yes, even one leg Garnett) would be tops in the league. It has been rumored that San Antonio has been shopping Ginobili; well, how does Garnett sound?
Second move: We need to trade Ray Allen for one good player, and one or more expiring contracts. Here are some possibilities:
Ray Allen for Maggette, Bell (expiring), George (expiring), and Morrow (who is expiring but will probably be re-signed).
Ray Allen for Caron Butler and Mike Miller (expiring).
Ray Allen for Kirk Hinrich and Jerome James (expiring).
Ray Allen for Kevin Martin and Kenny Thomas (expiring).
There are a lot of possibilities with trading Ray Allen. The key is that, in this plan to blow it up, I want one good wing player, who has about 5 or 6 good years left and expiring garbage. The player doesn't have to be an All-Star or anything. Of course I'd prefer Luol Deng, Andre Iguodala, or Kevin Martin. But if teams were not willing to make those deals, then I'd be willing to settle for a caron Butler or Kirk Hinrich or Corey Maggette.
Third move: Let Pierce become a free agent and then re-sign him. I think 10 mil per year for five years would be mighty generous for The Truth. That would be 50 mil, probably more money than he would make if he were to stay with his deal next year for 21 mil.
Fourth move: Sign Chris Bosh. All of this is for nothing if we cannot sign Bosh. Bosh is the guy. After trading Garnett and Allen (for mostly expiring garbage), and letting everyone else on the current roster expire, and signing Pierce to a new deal, the Celtics will be under the cap. They could make a legitimate run at Bosh. Boston is a big market and, after making these moves, we will have a pretty good roster.
