So if you had to describe your game using a Celtic (or another NBA player), who would it be?  For me, the answer is without question, Eddie House.  I am (was?) a shooting guard in a PG's body.  Can't dribble that well, am small, will shoot it as soon as I get it.

  • Rondo = Good
I didn't really play basketball at all before last summer (I'm a junior in college) so I'm not very good at it.  I grew up playing soccer.  I try to play defense as best I can and only shoot when I'm open.  I'm not particularly tall or athletic (can't jump high), but I think I know how to play decent 1 on 1 defense and I'm gradually improving my ability to shoot when I'm not under pressure.

So basically when I play basketball I feel like Brian Scalabrine.  The best I can do is play well enough to not be a liability and try to do an okay job of defending my assignment.

I'd like to be more like Shane Battier though (my favorite player) or Bruce Bowen.  Lock down, physical 1 on 1 D and decent ability to rebound, lay it in, and hit an open 3 from the corners.
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.

I'd have to say Mike Miller, but with better D. Solid jumper, limited turnovers, decent handle and can take over point for a while. But don't really score in bunches and don't really take over games. I like how Miller has the scrappiness factor to him.

I play like Rondo. I'm 6'1'' (in shoes ;D) and the season before I broke my leg, I was the best defender on my team, the best scorer and lead the team in assists. I played based on my speed, didn't take a lot of 3pt, I would guess that I had Perk like FG cause I used to get to the rim at will and I had Rondo like FT%  :-X

I play like I don't belong in the NBA. :)

.....Kinda like a PG. I can pretty much pass on the dot if I want to, and I can dribble out of trouble, but I can't shoot well enough for people to trust me with the ball.

Nice thread idea, TP droopdog7.

My Charley Rosen scouting report:

Solid 1 on 1 defense, harrassing the ball handler, playing him tightly, contesting every shot. Sometimes gambling for the steal, but hustles to get back if the gamble fails. Team defense average. Average athlete, not too strong or long, at 5'9" and 150 lbs. Can be beaten to the rim by stronger and/or faster players, but defends gamely in the post depsite lack of strength. Though only possessing average foot-speed and vertical, has good acceleration and quick reactions, and a nice long first step.

No 3-point range, jumper only extends to about 18 feet, and form is inconsistent. Shoots FTs around 80% though. No real pull-up jumper, or jumper moving off the screen. Likes to drive, mainly to the left. Handles alright, but no dribble moves as such, and a poor right hand renders him unable to drive right with confidence.

Finishing at the rim is average, but has a unique running floater/hook, which his friends refer to with the portmanteau "fl-ook" (fluke) ;) The shot resembles a sky hook, and he can shoot it from anywhere up to the three-point line (succesful around 4/10 attempts, while 8/10 from the free-throw line). The shot is virtually unblockable, the only way to stop it is to deny the space required to take the step he needs to jump for the shot. Although he has an orthodox hook shot as well (up to 10 ft), he cannot really post up owing to lack of bulk, and it can be blocked fairly easily by taller defenders.

Travels with Charley: (jk!)

----

Wow. it's kinda sad that I wrote so much while everyone else has a sentence or too :-\. I guess I'm closest to Rondo, without the passing ability and unselfishness (yes, I'll admit that I am a bit of a chucker ;D - in fact, my floaters look as if I am actually "chucking" the ball). I'm really a sort of SG in a severely undersized PG's body.

I play like me and can't really compare myself to any NBA player. I've played hoops since i can remember, as my parents immersed my sibs and I in all sports, and I'm a decent baller with a great shooting stroke and good anticipation on D, but if I could play like an NBA player, then I'd be in the NBA. Sorry, but this is just one of those delusions of grandeur questions for me ... I think the only people who can realistically compare themselves to professional athletes are those who have proven to be able to compete at that level, otherwise it's just a "legend in your own mind" kind of thing ... just my very humble opinion about these kinds of questions. I guess it's fun for some to imagine such, but not very realistic. ;)

I guess one way that this comparing thing is more relevant with regard to the NBA is due to the physical requirements (namely height). For instance, in football (soccer) if you actually are as skilled as a pro player you CAN become pro, whether you're 5'6", 145 lbs, or 6'3", 220 lbs.

However, loads of people have NBA type skills e.g. jumpshot, without NBA height. Mike Penberthy (Lakers player) was "discovered" shooting ajavascript:void(0);t the YMCA, or something like that (although he had entered the draft 5 or 6 years prior). Dennis Johnson, at 5'9" when leaving High School, couldn'get a basketball scholarship. After growing 6 inches over the next year, he was "found", went to junior college, then onto Pepperdine and then to become an NBA superstar (unrelated - why isn't he in the HOF?? >:().

I guess there are many 5'9" people who are more skilled than NBA end-of-bench, 7-foot stiffs who collect $800,000 every year. There is the counterpoint that these 5'9" skills wouldn't translate to a 7-foot body, but my point is still valid - you can always use height as an excuse to why you aren't playing pro ball, more so than in other sports.

I dunno who I play like. Tell me who this sounds like:

First off; I'm 6-1 and weigh in at 190 pounds.

- I'm a guard atm, but can also play at forward and have some post moves (but no post experience)
- I got solid ballhandling, I'm a PG, I get my team involved
- ... to the extend that I don't take enough shots
- I got a good fade-away *move* but I somehow always end up clanging it off the back of the rim.
- I end up under the basket a buttload of times after like 3 or 4 fakes, get past almost anyone but always miss because I can't finish around the rim.
- My coach complains that in games, as opposed to at practice, I play uninspired offense; I don't go all out for the shot and end up losing the ball after getting past my defender(s).

- On D I'm the most active and talkative player.
- I play better when I get hit in the face by the opponent at some point, or when I don't get calls going my way (I play very focussed when angered)
- I take lots of charges.
- I can defend any position I want; I can box out like BBD but my lateral movement is fast enough to defend most point guards.

- I hustle. I want to win. If there's a loose ball, I'll go for it. I run, dive and fight.

- When I get tired, I'm turnover prone in everywhich way.

- I see the passing lanes, but I hate how my team doesn't always expect a pass. This means that a lot of the time they don't expect a pass when they're perfectly open, and I get blamed cuz there was no eye contact.

- I shoot a decent three, but don't take it as much as I should.

I know that last bit doesn't quite say as much about me as it does about what I think of the rest of my team, but I had to mention it cuz it's my biggest gripe atm.

So, who does this sound like?

.edit: oh, and last season I got the highest ft% of the whole basketball club. I shot a lot of them, but lately I haven't shot many.

.edit2: had to add my 3p stuff.

I'm 5'9" and have only been blocked once in the last couple years. I have a good shot selection. I used to be pass first, but have really improved my shot, so I take it a lot now. Unless there is a better shooter on my team, then I get the ball to them. I am constantly called Steve Nash while I'm playing and I find the description to be accurate. However, I play better D than Nash. I have somehow become a good shot blocker because of watching youtube videos featuring Rasheed Wallace teaching good timing when blocking shots.

Like Kiorrik if I get hit adrenaline kicks in and I play better. I broke my nose my senior year of high school and never got it reset. Whenever anybody touches it with the smallest amount of force it starts bleeding. It doesn't hurt that bad, but it makes me play better, so I'm fine with it. I used to smoke a lot and my lungs haven't completely come around yet, so I tend to get pretty sloppy when I can't breathe.

grew up in the 80's so I modeled my game after the Big Three actually. I talked trash and shot like Larry Bird. Or I should say that's what I tried to do.
I'm tall and have long arms so I really worked on learning Kevin McHale's low post moves. And I really liked and practiced Robert Parish's rainbow jumper.

If I had to pick one person then it be Bird. I'm a tall, slow white guy who couldn't jump. So needless to say I really tried to copy what Bird was doing.

Hah, I'm asthmatic so I get winded easily too. I don't play lazy though, just sloppy.

I had my first block this year. Was on a break from behind. Wasn't a hard swat, more of a tap to get it to not go in. Was awesome.
