With the shrinking salary cap and the glut of high-profile free agents, Ray Allen is part of that veteran middle class that is likely to find themselves forced to be underpaid for the MLE.
I'm pessimistic about being able to get good value for Ray Allen in a mid-season trade. In fact, if Allen were traded, I would want it to be a waving of the white flag that gets Ainge a draft pick or two to work with.
Another option is gambling that you can package him in a sign-and-trade after the season with a team that expects to lose a free agent and wants something of value in return. I'm not a salary cap guru, but I believe after the season Glen Davis is no longer a base-year compensation guy, which makes it easier to trade him.
What would Big Baby at $3.3 million and/or Rasheed Wallace at 6.3, with Ray Allen signed to something between $8 and 12 million get? I suppose there are a lot of players who would do it in a heartbeat if it could net Dwyane Wade with a contract extension. Who else is worth it? What are the chances of it happening if Ray doesn't get traded before the deadline?
