Hubie Brown is like an encyclopedia of basketball knowledge and wisdom.  It seems there is nothing related to basketball about which he doesn't have some pearl of wisdom that is just bursting out of his soul, which he cannot help sharing with us.  And not only is Hubie wise, he is also extremely generous.  Many wise people would be stingy with their wisdom.  Not Hubie.  When Hubie has the microphone, he realizes the TV audience has a mere 2.5 hours window of opportunity to soak up as much free Hubie wisdom as possible, and so he generously fills the broadcast with his dulcet voice from start to finish, dutifully piling clause on top of clause lest a precious sentence have to come to an end, selflessly pausing for a breath only when physically necessary, allowing the audience to bask in his glorious wisehood and knowlegableness.

I think it was pretty clear he meant on the ball defender against the other teams best wing.  And he was right of course.

Hubie Brown compliments EVERYBODY.  The guy is just a super nice person.  He never really says anything negative about an individual...i notice that over the years.  He'll find something positive and go with it.

I really enjoy listening to Hubie Brown most of the time. I think he is interesting and announces with a good pace. Tonight he said one of the dumbest things I think I have ever heard. He said that TA was probably the best defender on the Celtics… EXCUSE ME?! If I were Kevin Garnett I think I would probably go punch the guy right in the nose. TA is probably a better defender than KG?! That is absolutely idiotic. I think TA is a solid defender. I think it is one of his few true strengths. That though is absolutely the dumbest thing I have ever heard though.
I agreed with him, and if you think KG plays good D...just look back at the box score of the first game with Minny okay.
KG can't even rebound anymore. Do not misplace TEAM DEFENDER WITH BEST DEFENDER  :)

He's talking about KG today, not KG in 2008 or even KG in December. Not that I agree with him, but KG's defense is a work in progress right now.

This here deserves a TP.  Hubie would be great to explain the game of basketball to my girlfriend.  However, I don't need him to meticulously and endlessly detail every single play.  The guy bores me to tears.

I'd rather have Hubie or JVG do that than Mark Jackson scream "momma there go dat man!", "a grown man move!", "great defense better offense", and generic calls to always trap or double a "superstar".

I'd rather have Mark Jackson than Kevin Harlan.  “LeBron James With No Regard for Human Life!” is the stupidest thing I've ever heard come out an announcer's mouth.

There have also been several attempts to explain rules during various sports broadcasts where the announcers is both incorrect about the rule and what actually happened on the field.

Kevin Harlan is the Gus Johnson of the NBA and I enjoy listening to booth as well as Hubie.  Hubie LOVES him some Rondo. I have no problem with his incessant need to prop up even the average player (Tony Allen and his great defense).  Hubie comes from the old school where ball movement was key which is why he and everyone else should enjoy the C's while you can.

Hubie is my alltime favorite commentator.  Maybe he meant perimeter defender, but even if he didn't, right now the statement may be true.  Tony's defense has been awesome, and KG isn't where he was when he was healthy this year.  We've seen guys like Rashard Lewis leaving KG stuck in quicksand in the last week.  Of course that will change as KG rounds into shape, but as of right now I have to agree with Hubie.  TA is playing impact defense right now.

Hubie is one of the few commentators I like. He's all basketball, no bull, unlike others such as Jeff Van Gundy who talk more about their personal life than the game.

And I have to agree with him - right now, Tony Allen is the best defender on this team.

Was rewatching a little bit last night, and I think I have a new contender:

"Coming up at halftime, a discussion of what it takes to be a great coach, with Avery Johnson and Byron Scott!"    :D

The best part was he paused a little bit after Avery's name, it made it sound like he realized how ridiculous it sounded.

he was tonight

He was so great tonight that he let Wade go off for 30 pts on 11-16 shooting. Also let him toss 13 assists to his teammates. TA made ONE big defensive play today poking that ball away from Wade, however if he had been able to stay with him the rest of the game it wouldn't have come down to that.

Before everyone goes crazy about how great Wade is, I realize he was going to drop 20+ on anyone, but he gave up 3 pts better than his average shooting 69% from the floor and doubling his normal output of assists. No matter how you slice it it's not like TA did some fabulous job on Wade last night.

I went back and re-listened to the section and there is no question he was talking about more than just that game and that he meant the whole team. PP was hurt last night so do we say that he is the worst Guard on the Celtics?! Last night he was because he couldn't even suit up. This was definitely an insult to KG even though I don't think Hubie meant it that way. The guy is old, but what a stupid comment.

EJPLAYA I agree Tony didn't lock down Wade when he was on him, but we can't forget that Ray guarded Wade for much of the night.
