I really enjoy listening to Hubie Brown most of the time. I think he is interesting and announces with a good pace. Tonight he said one of the dumbest things I think I have ever heard. He said that TA was probably the best defender on the Celtics… EXCUSE ME?! If I were Kevin Garnett I think I would probably go punch the guy right in the nose. TA is probably a better defender than KG?! That is absolutely idiotic. I think TA is a solid defender. I think it is one of his few true strengths. That though is absolutely the dumbest thing I have ever heard though.

  • Rondo = Good
Best perimeter defender?  Probably.  Best defender?  Um...is TA ever going to win DPOY?  I think not.

Not actually dumb with KG's current physical state.

Rondo would be a better argument at the moment.

Beyond that, Tommy says many things that are far dumber.

You can't question a legend lik Hubie Brown. Hubie is the best thing on ESPN. Lets see Tony is better defender than House, BBD, Rasheed, Bill, Scal, JR, Shelden, Ray, KG(no legs), Rondo(lazy D), Marquis(Who is this guy). So that leaves Pierce and Perk. So 3rd at best 2nd best defeder on the Celtics. Hubie might have meant that specfic game.

KG is a better team defender, Tony is a better individual defender. A large part of that is the fact that big men are more important to overall team defense.

Their adjusted +/- on defense is actually pretty close.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
i have been a long-time fan of hubie brown since the 80's...but i will say this: he was way off his game tonight.  honestly, he's starting to get that senile aura about him in which he says things that aren't quite factual coming from someone who should know the game.  i question just how much hubie is in tune to the intricacies of each team in the year 2010...

Oh come on. Just a few weeks ago Gary Tanguay acted like Craig Smith's 3rd foul in the middle of the 4th quarter was noteworthy.

Tony Allen is probably the Celtics' best one on one defender on the perimeter.  Why is that so controversial?

Perk's hands are pretty good for catching so long as the pass isn't low. Especially on a team with Shelden. I don't see Perk missing many passes.

I agree - Perk seems to mostly drop passes in traffic because he isn't looking, not because he can't catch it.

I noticed the TA thing too, wondered if it'd be on CB.  Wasn't disappointed.  I think Hubie meant perimeter defender and misspoke, but you could make the case that TA is a better on-ball defender than KG right now.  I respect Hubie's knowledge more than anyone else on TV, though.  He knows his stuff.
