That's right fans. The Celtics you have grown accustomed to watching over the past two and a half years will be back...Right after the all star break.
Before I explain why, let's get one thing straight, if anyone in this forum, or any Celtics fan in general is expecting the Celtics of 2007/8, it isn't going to happen. That was a special team and they are gone.
That being said, there is no reason why we cant conjure up some new Celtics Mojo this season. Lets run through the facts:
1) The Celtics have NOT had their full roster healthy for one game this season. Tony Allen and Glen Davis started the season banged up. Pierce has sat out, Rasheed has sat out, KG has sat out, and most recently Marquis Daniels, our supposed James Posey replacement is out.
I strongly believe that if we can get all of our players healthy (a big if, indeed) then we are set for the playoffs.
2) Kevin Garnett is at somewhere around 50%. He's playing on one leg, and its clear he still isn't in shape. Regardless of the reasoning, Garnett in spent by the fourth quarter these days, and you have to expect that to be (at least partially) fixed come playoff time. I view right now as a tune up session for our favorite power forward.
3) Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, and Kendrick Perkins. Whether you like their style or not, the three of them have been busting their humps to keep the Celtics in contention this season. Pierce has been Pierce all season long, averaging over 19 points per game while shooting over 45% from three. Kendrick Perkins has a developing post game to go along with his already stellar interior defense. Rajon Rondo's first allstar appearance has said it all - The kid's growing up.
4) Eddie House, Glen Davis, Rasheed Wallace. These three players were supposed to compose the best bench in the NBA. Eddie House has shown what no one wanted to admit: his best minutes come in garbage time. Glen Davis has digressed since last season. Rasheed Wallace has become a chucker, and refuses to play in the post where he has been incredibly effective.
5) Ray Allen. The best three point shooter of all time behind Reggie Miller. So silky smooth, so untouchable. NOT this season. Ray is shooting career lows, and looks lost on offense. The only good thing you can say about him so far is that he played good defense on Kobe. That's it. He's been an utter disappointment, and that's why his head is on a platter at the moment.
Why are #'s 2 4 and 5 good things? Because even with Ray Allen playing like a rookie, and the trio of House, Davis and Wallace playing like they don't belong, and Kevin Garnett playing on one leg, the Celtics STILL have a record of 29-16, which is good for 4th place in the East.
We've achieved that record with no opportunities for our entire team to mesh, with injuries plaguing us.
Anyone else think that our C's have no where to go but up? I sure do. When we get healthy, and everyone starts calling us the class of the East again, I'll be the one standing there saying "I told you so".
Mark my words: "We're going to be a force after the all-star break".
Thank you.
