If they don't get an expiring contract for Ray Allen, then their payroll for next season would be extremely high. They're already at $65M, adding $18 millions or so would put it at $83 millions for 10 players or so. Not happening. With the lux. tax. threshold expected to come down to around $64M, the Celtics would be risking to pay above $110 millions in salaries for a team whose chances for contending would be unknown.

The Celtics are a highly leveraged franchise, I doubt they'll trot out next season with a payroll similar to the one of the last 2 seasons. If Ray Allen is traded, we'll get some expirings back in order to make up for Rondo's raise next season.

Wojo has become (or maybe he has always been, but was just buried at ESPN) one of the best NBA "insiders" around.  I like the vagueness of this report, where he does not throw around speculated "rumors".  This sounds like its legit, and it passes the smell test.  But the question is, will the right deal present itself?
If we try to get an expiring contract along with a player, you better believe that the we will downgrade this year's roster (because the only expiring contracts you can get are for garbage players).
Can Marcus Camby be the expiring please?  ;D

Eric Gordon and Camby for Ray?

I'd like it.  Gordon, Camby, Brian Skinner, Craig Smith and their Trade Exception for Allen and Big Baby works in the trade checker.  Maybe toss a 1st round pick in there.  Gordon may not be Ray Allen right now, but I think he could be an extremely good player.  I do understand its very unlikely as the Clippers have zero reason to make this trade, but who knows.  They've made plenty of worse moves.
do it

Well, if nothing else, Danny can try his "I would have traded Larry" theory on a much smaller scale.  My guess is, this blows up in his face, as it will decrease our chance of winning this year, and will doom us to mediocrity in the future.

I hope I'm wrong, but Corey Maggette (for instance) is not the core type of player to build around, while cutting payroll at the same time.

But what if we got Raja Bell with him? That would be a pretty good return for Ray. Raja starts and adds better man to man defense and is a 40% 3pt shooter and Maggette comes of the bench at least for the rest of the year.

Raja Bell is old and coming off an injury.  Will he even play this season?

he had surgery in December and it is a 3 month recovery so he will be back by the end of February. He may be old(33) but he is still younger than Ray.

Well then Mr. Hobbs the only trade that might satisfy what the C's want to do but what we would like in return might be

Ray Allen to Scaramento for Kevin Martin and kenny Thomas

PG: George Hill, Ty Lawson
SG: Ray Allen, Anthony Parker, Quentin Richardson
SF: Grant Hill, Matt Barnes, D
PF: Zach Randolph, Kenyon Martin, Jon Brockman, Dante Cunningham

I think the target should be the Wiz.

Butler along with either Miller or Foye and James work.

Houston is wanting Haywood with Butler.  Wiz want a young useful player.

Throw in Davis and a 1st.

I agree completely with this, which is why I said I was not for any of the trades currently being circulated.

Getting slightly younger, cheaper and worse is a recipe for years of 40 to 50 win seasons and second round playoff exits.

if staying put is not an option, either blow it up and restart or upgrade the talent. Upgrading the talent would likely be contingent on taking bad contracts. If taking back bad contracts is out of the question, I hope they don't make a trade that gives up on this year's team to guarantee the 4th spot 3 years from now.

I like the deal in general but I have no desire to throw in a 1st and Baby one or the other or none would seem more fair to me.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

If the Celtics are getting back Miller or Foye, then it is worth the throw in.

I'd be fine with that, but I can't see Sacramento doing it.  If they're moving Martin, it's got to be to dump salary, right?

yea , it would probably have to be Noccioni and Martin for Ray and a 1st which I would do in a second, but doesn't sound like Wyc would.

While I'd love to have Martin's skillset here for the long-term, it should at least be noted that his games played totals in 2007-08 and 2008-09 were 61 and 51 respectively, and he has only played 14 this season due to injury.  For a guy built like a stringbean at 6-7, 185, that's a bit disconcerting.

But when he's healthy, he's a heck of an offensive player.
