Quote
The Celtics have initiated trade proposals on Allen, multiple league sources say, and Boston is searching for a younger, less expensive guard and an expiring contract. This way they can find a replacement for the 34-year-old Allen without losing him and his $20 million expiring contract for nothing in free agency this summer. Only, there isn’t a shooting guard available who’s Allen’s peer. This threatens a perilous choice between transitioning for the future and refusing to compromise a chance to win a title now.

Allen is privately resigned to the fact that it’s unlikely the Celtics will want to re-sign him this summer. He’s believed to be intrigued with the possibility of joining the Miami Heat or staying close to his Connecticut home and signing with the New York Knicks. Nevertheless, Allen wants to stay a Celtic and that’s never wavered. Yet the sheer economics make it improbable unless he’s willing to cost himself several million dollars next year.

Wojo has become (or maybe he has always been, but was just buried at ESPN) one of the best NBA "insiders" around.  I like the vagueness of this report, where he does not throw around speculated "rumors".  This sounds like its legit, and it passes the smell test.  But the question is, will the right deal present itself?

I have a feeling that these "speculatory" articles are only going to increase between now and the trading deadline.

The Celtics slump certainly exacerbates this, also.

If we try to get an expiring contract along with a player, you better believe that the we will downgrade this year's roster (because the only expiring contracts you can get are for garbage players).

Can Marcus Camby be the expiring please?  ;D

Maybe the Monta Ellis rumors were true , but Danny was the one who initiated it not the GSW. That would explain why Don Nelson was literally laughing when he heard the rumor of Ray for Ellis and Radmonovic.

No one is untouchable on this roster.  We should all know this by now.  And even if this team was not struggling, trading Ray has always been an option.  Of course Danny is working behind the scenes on this and other trades.

And please, no smallish two guard for Ray, especially one that cannot defend (like Gordon).

I'm not crazy about starting a hybrid guard either.  They are great 6th men, but I can't imagine trading Ray for a 6th man.

After reading hundreds of trade ideas and rumours, I've yet to find a realistic, feasible trade involving Ray Allen that would help both teams now and in the future. I have no doubt Ainge will be active trying to get value for Allen, I doubt he'll find something though.

I hope this is not true... I don't like the idea that Ray is resigned that the "Celtics won't resign this summer" and is already considering other teams.

I just hope Danny is not overreacting to the bad stretch... Ray has struggled this month but he is not the biggest culprit for our struggles and he will clearly not be replaced easily. I don't see any player who could take his place and be as efficient, or more.

That's not true.  There are decent expiring contracts that can be had that could help this team out.

I already proposed the Allen for Richardson and Harrington deal, which would fit this description.

If the Wizards blow it up, you could do possibly look for something like Ray and a pick for Butler and Mike Miller.

And then there are numerous other 3 and 4 team trades that could work out as well, with guys like Butler, Richardson, and Miller being some of the best options as the new SG.

How about Iggy, I'm sure Ray Allen is 10 times more appealing than an old & broken McGrady.

would love it , but no way Philly trades him within the division. How about Kevin Martin ? He doesn't seem to be able to play with Tyreke Evans and there were rumors he might be on the block.

It's likely not the big name/expiring that teams will care about: it's the young talent that will be included with it. The Rox have more young and desirable players than we do.

And rondohondo: Martin was the name that immediately came to mind when I read the article (whether feasible or not.)
