BEIJING (Reuters) - Twice NBA All Star point guard Stephon Marbury will become the highest profile American to play in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) after he agreed to join China's Shanxi Club.

The 32-year-old, a free agent since leaving the Boston Celtics last season, had agreed a deal with the northern club and would arrive in Shanxi next week, the team announced on their official website (www.sxcba.com).

"The aim of signing Marbury is to pay back our fans and try to win more games in the rest of the season," said Shanxi boss Wang Xingjiang.

The 2001 and 2003 NBA All Star was expected to help boost Shanxi's ticket sales as well as their chances of making the playoffs. Shanxi is currently 15th in the 17-team league.

Wang added that Marbury's salary would not be too high because the former New Jersey Nets and Phoenix Suns player wanted to promote his personal brand of shoes in China.

Shanxi last season hired former NBA player Bonzi Wells, who scored as many as 50 points a game. The contract ended after less than two months when Wells went on holiday but failed to return on time.

I find it sad for Stephon, I really liked him during his short tenure here. Sure he didn't produce and he went crazy this summer but I think he is a good guy and I would like to see him in the NBA.

Mabury doesn't do a lot of smart things anymore, however this was a very bright one I think. He should make a lot of money on his shoe line and can play a little ball at the same time. Who knows, he might do well enough over there and shake some rust off his jumper which could entice some NBA team to give him a contract again. Doubt it, but he'd be in a better position than he is right now.

That is a very smart business move.  He can promote his style of basketball and the market in China for his shoes is unbelievable.  I have a lot of respect for Starbury for his shoes.  Best of luck for him.

how does one respect "shoes"?  ???

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Haha!  I cut off the sentence midway and failed to go back to see if it makes sense.  What I meant is that I respect what Marbury has been doing with the Starbury shoes, as in finding ways to make affordable shoes for lower income kids.  While there are those Lebron shoes that cost $130 bucks, he makes shoes that looks good and are under 20 bucks.  I think he can make the same type of operation for young kids in China and since the market is huge (and the cost of labor is probably even cheaper), he can make a lot of shoes and spread his enterprise.

I don't see Marbury being able to handle China off the court.
