I wondering if our space cap will change alot if P2 restructures and I also wonder if Wyc is still will to go over the cap and pay the luxury tax for the "right player"?

There is no real way for the Celtics to get any meaningful cap space unless Pierce takes an unrealistic pay cut.

Without his option we still have $42 million on the books for only 5 players, then we would have roster charges that will eat up about 5 million in cap space since we have to sign 13 players under league rules. We'd also have to renounce Ray Allen's bird rights.

So unless you have Pierce coming in for absolute peanuts the C's are looking at only having the MLE to spend.

No matter what Paul does in terms of opting out and restructuring, it's not going to leave us with major cap room.

I expect Wyc to continue to spend, although I would assume that our current budget is at just about our maximum.

Technically we could renounce him and Ray if he opt'd out, we'd have a decent amount of room them. And way to many holes to fill....

The crazy thing is, even if we parted with Pierce, Ray, Eddie, Tony, Daniels, Giddens, Williams, and Scal, we *still* wouldn't have room to sign a guy to a max contract.  Plus, we wouldn't have our MLE available, meaning we'd have about $10 million (or so, plus minimum contracts, to fill out our roster.

What that means, of course, is that our best course of action is to re-sign our current guys (or move them in sign-and-trades), while utilizing our MLE.

That's what happens when you spend the full MLE and have two other highly paid players.

Though if Pierce wanted to talk about opting out and getting an extension the team would be all ears. I doubt Pierce would bother though, I can't imagine many extensions that work for both him and the Celtics.

Yeah, working out a longer-but-cheaper extension would help relieve some of the luxury tax burden, which may be able to better bolster the team next year.  We'd still be limited in how we can bring free agents in, but it would free up some flexibility.

The important thing to take away from this, of course, is that we really have no realistic chance at any cap space this off-season.

I'm really interested to see what Miami puts together this off-season.

Is Wyc really willing to pay the luxury tax on another big player?

I'm curious regarding how RealGM is figuring out its numbers.  For instance, it projects Chicago to have $21.1 million under a $52.5 million cap.  However, their current salaries total about $37.7 million for next year.  That's about $14.8 million.

That assumes that they renounce Ty Thomas, and that they renounce their #1 pick.

I think they're getting ahead of themselves and assuming Hinrich is traded lol.

This article is more theory than anything but it is still interesting none the less. But I do think they are assuming certain things . I am nbot sure where they got that figure because all the players at the bottom are there except Tyrus? Intersting.

So Royhobbs do you think Wyc is going to splurge for the right free agent and pay the luxury tax? I mean say the brought in one of these guys, could one of these free agents change the revenue enough for the team to justify paying the luxury tax from a financial stand point? I think Lebron would but could Bosh or Wade? But less face Lebron is not walking throught that door! But will one of the others come?

Wyc has already paid the luxury tax the past two years, and will again this year.

The Celtics are going to likely use the MLE and fill whatever holes they can with that. The biggest question is do we resign Ray Allen, and if we don't can we get some value for him in a sign and trade.
