Looks like there will be a dunk-off competition to determine who actually gets to participate in the real contest. Not sure what to think of this  :-\

http://www.nba.com/2010/news/01/13/slam.dunk-in/index.html?ls=iref:nbahpt2

This one-round slam dunk-in competition will be held during halftime of the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam on Friday, Feb. 12, and fans will determine the winner by voting via SMS text message and at NBA.com.

The participants will have two dunks each, with a two-minute time limit to complete each dunk. The player with a higher percentage of overall votes will advance to participate in the Sprite Slam Dunk contest on All-Star Saturday Night. The other three contestants in the Sprite Slam Dunk will be announced on Monday, Jan. 18.

Interesting ... well, all they need is a Superman cape and they're set ... they don't even have to dunk!

So who are the automatics?

LeBron? Since he told us all last year that he'll be in the dunk contest this year.

Dwight? He wears a Superman cape so he's obviously the best dunker in the NBA.

Nate??? He's barely even suited up this season...

Maybe I sound like a bitter old man (if you consider 29 old) but I yearn for the old days of the Slam Dunk competition.

But yeh, that, and I actually think it sounds like a good option.

I kind of liked the whole Dwight superman thing, and the Kryptonate too. The dunks were good and it was quite entertaining.

When the best dunkers were in the competition and they did their best new dunks that hadn't been seen rather than change their outfit and then dunk?

That's definitely part of it.

Is Lebron actually gonna do it or did he back out?  I don't see any hoop-la about Lebron doing the Slam Dunk contest.  I think it would be a big deal, although I can def see him doing an everyday dunk and all the judges having heart attacks and making up a score of 17.

Eh, no big deal, better than last year when you just voted for a dunker based on nothing.  At least this way it's a little more fair.

The old dunk contests were great, but it's not the NBA's fault.  I would love to have 8 players competing, half of which being big time All Stars, but when players don't want to compete there isn't much the NBA can really do.

My prediction.  He'll end up with a "sore hamstring" or something right before the contest, coincidentally just enough to keep him out of the dunk contest, but not enough to keep him out of the All Star game.

If LeBron is in it, I want Jordan Crawford as a judge!

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

interesting to see how it plays out.  they have had some pretty terrible ideas to improve it.....remember the wheel thing, where contestants had to recreate a famous dunk?! lol  that failed with epic proportions.

the dunk contest last year was ok, better than I expected. Problem with the qualifying competition is that the guys will use up two of their dunks, they won't have much new stuff left for the real thing. The contest that desperately needs a qualifying round is the 3pt contest, especially after seeing the guys who were in it the last couple of years.

Eric Gordon will face DeMar DeRozan in the dunk-in for a spot in the contest.
