Didn't see it posted, I'm sure everyone's heard about him going to USC. If not go here,
http://www.mercurynews.com/sports/ci_14175406. He's replacing Pete Carroll as their head coach. I find it kind of funny for even USC to pull the trigger for him so quickly and didn't really see Lane Kiffin working for the Trojans again. Well, one he only had 6+ recruiting violations, 2 had a mediocre year with a guy who's going to be the next Ed Reed/Troy Polamalu, 3 talked trash when he wasn't in a position to do so, and 4 fired by Oakland (who sucked when they had him and still do...lol). He just played Tennessee, pretty bad. I don't get how this guy keeps getting jobs, especially at big programs either. I remember seeing his first interview as the Raider's head coach and he seemed like he'd get the job done, but I was only 12 and that's probably the only age group that he appeals to as a coach anyways. Haha, not trying to make it seem like an angry rant or like an idiot either, but I find this funny. Doesn't seem like a good move for USC. Any one have any input?

He'll fit right in at USC, since that program doesn't have any qualms about recruiting violations, either.

I'm a little surprised USC pulled the trigger, since they're currently under investigation.  The Tennessee program over the last year has been, at best, questionable.

Un...be...lievable.   And yet totally believeable. I'm pretty sure if he goes anywhere near the state of TN for the rest of his life he'll be in mortal danger (despite the fact he left that place in better shape than he found it).

Kiffin's a scumbag.

Sadly, this practice is becoming more and more commonplace among college head coaches in football and basketball.

They bounce from place to place, chasing top dollar while burning bridges and angering alumni bases.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
I think the way college coaches (FB&BB) bounce around is despicable. Lookin at you, Saban. And you, Calipari.

At least Saban and Calipari can win games as a head coach, this guy hasn't proven he can yet.

Wow.  That's a serious penalty for the opt out.

Quote
A source has confirmed to Volquest.com that Tennessee head football coach Lane Kiffin is leaving UT to take over at the University of Southern California.

Kiffin served as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator under Pete Carroll before leaving to take the head coaching job with the NFL's Oakland Raiders. Kiffin was hired to replace long-time Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer.

Carroll is leaving USC to take the head coaching job with the NFL's Seattle Seahawks.

Kiffin was in the first year of his contract with Tennessee and has an $800,000 penalty in his contract for leaving the job after his first season. The Vols were 7-6 this season after losing to Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

Volquest is reporting that Kiffin will meet with the media at 9:30 p.m. tonight.

Why? If someone offered you more money to do the same thing wouldn't you leave your job? It's a free market. This is the USA where employers have to offer competitive salaries, not Japan where people stay in the same job for their entire life.

If colleges don't like it they need to write contracts that have penalties for leaving.

I guess its a philosophical difference. Maybe I just tend to romanticize sports in my head, but football coaches, especially when they're coaching amateurs, should be part parent, part mentor, and part coach.

When they make a commitment to a school, they're making a commitment to the players they recruited, and when they leave, they're leaving their kids behind. They're not leaving paid athletes behind either (or at least they're not supposed to be), they're leaving kids who play a sport.

Maybe I'm just desensitized because when this happens (routinely) to BC nobody cares and just thinks of it as natural. So when it happens to a team that thinks of themselves as having a birthright to winning it doesn't bother me.

Coaches are routinely fired for not winning. So it's natural to me that they routinely leave for more money or better situations.

The difference is that if a coach is fired, he generally collects his entire contract.  If he leaves his team, he may have to pay a buyout, but the university is left with little recourse.

The people who get most screwed over, of course, are the recruits / players.

It may be true that they pay his entire contract, but whose fault is that?

I'm also not so sure the team is left with little recourse. For example, USC took the course of poaching Kiffin, and I'm sure UT will poach a coach from somewhere else, and if that coach is Spaz at BC nobody will care.

I see what you're saying about recruits, but that depends a little. If a coach said "I'll be here for four years" and then leaves that's one thing, but if he doesn't then what. And how exactly are they getting screwed over? Are their scholarships getting yanked?  Only 2% of these guys go pro and they are allowed to transfer.
