I don't know of any NBA team that "boxes out." Besides, boxing out is not the cause the the Celtics rebounding deficiencies, it's their lack of hustle. The Celtics would be a much better team if they had a 6'7" or 6'8" pure energy/hustle player off the bench.

Not at all, and please don't judge this site on the comments of one or two ... it really is a great blog. I can't speak for others, but I think some people assume that everyone should know all the fundamentals of the game as a kind of prerequisite for joining a blog community, but I and most others disagree, and welcome almost everyone, regardless of their knowledge of the game, or level of expertise.

I, for one, am glad to have people here who are new to the game ... they offer a fresh insight and honest assessment of the game from a new direction, and that's a vital part of keeping things exciting and visceral, as well as helping to keep some of the "rusty" ones like me on our toes. Also, I've found that by helping others to learn, I hone my own knowledge as well, and sometimes learn things in the process.

Many of us have known the game for a long time, and I think we can take for granted sometimes that not everyone has a background knowledge of the game, but all the more reason to have a blog, as a place where new enthusiasts can come and ask questions and learn about the game in a community atmosphere.

I feel very bad that you were offended and I don't blame you, (though I think it's probably just a misunderstanding), but I hope you'll give us more chances to win you over here. You haven't been here long, but I can tell that you're very intelligent and articulate, and that you'd be a great addition to the CB community.

So please know that I and many others welcome you with open arms, and welcome the chance to help you learn about the game without fear of judgement or reproach. Anyways, back to the OP.

As KungPoweChicken states, i dont think many NBA teams tend to really "Box Out".  I think teams are so cautious of the opposition fast-breaking, they rely heavily on getting numbers back. Therefore, they do not put themselves in position to crash the offensive boards so there is no real need for the defensive team to completely box out.

I guess the Hawks were looking to take advantage of the fact that the Celtics werent looking to push the ball too much (injuries, shorter rotation) so they increased their focus on offensive rebounds.

With that said, they did get a couple of timely offensive boards, but i wouldnt say the C's did poorly there.

I have no idea what illegal defense is.  I think it's just a stupid rule that allow refs to change the game, but I'm not sure

With all due respect to Hubbie Brown, boxing out is overrated at the NBA level. It helps, but not nearly as much as it does at lower levels. That said, this teams needs rebounding badly.

Isn't it the cause of the other team getting all those second chance tip ins, like Atlanta did..? I was talking about defensive rebounds. I do still hope sheldon W does that, but i was disappointed in him in the atlanta game.

Boxing out is a very simple concept, but hard to perfect.  You need to have quick feet to shuffle them as you gain position on a player, and you also need to adapt as the ball is on the air and have a strong enough base to prevent movement from the opponent behind you.  It is a very simple concept, but it does take a tremendous amount of practice and body control to perfect it.  However, it does allow guys like David Lee and Charles Barkley, who were undersized, to be a double double machine.

The Hawks only grabbed one more offense rebound than the Celtics. Our real problem was that they shot better than us, particularly during an awful stretch of the third quarter.

Well, you got me there, all i know is the gym pickup game, and that most players, when boxed out early (especially the big rebounders) will just accept it, instead of trying harder to get the rebound. It is a lot of work, but i love the blue collar rebounder/shot blocker type...!
