Sean Williams to be waived

This is the shot blocking monster from New Jersey, not the shawne williams of Dallas.


Now I know he has done nothing ever since his rookie year, but when I saw him play in his rookie year it was enough to convince me that he was a special talent that could be a dominant defensive player. I've seen few players that could block better then this guy, I'm not sure if the Celtics even need this guy but he's at least worth discussing imo. I think Tony Allen has played well enough that unless we can get a clear upgrade at the wings, we will not sign another wing player.  Do you think he can have a positive role on this team, and/or do you think he should be in the discussion for the final roster spot or even a couple of 10 day contracts?


IMO he has more "potential" then even a stromile swift or a kwame brown ever had and these players got way more opportunites to succeed then Sean Williams has. I really want to see what he can do after being guided by someone like KG and  even Perkins.

I really like this guy....if we can get him for nothing, then I'm all for it.

He could be our "Long, Strong, Athletic, Forward" that we need..

I would rather keep the six big men that already here -- Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins, Rasheed Wallace, Glen Davis, Brian Scalabrine and Shelden Williams.

I don't think Sean Williams offers anything over those players. He has a lot of potential but limited current ability + a lot of bad habits to break through. I don't see him having a positive effect on the Celtics this season and I'm not willing to sacrifice the big man depth on the likelihood that he's able to make a positive difference next season.

I would take a gamble on him if we moved Sheldon Williams or BBD for a legit backup wing. I would love to see KG and Clifford Ray work on this kid. He has so much potential on both ends of the court. Rondo would be connecting on alley oops with him all the time, kinda like Chris Paul and Tyson Chandler a few years ago. I think a vet team is exactly what this kid needs to grow as a bench player . He is a Chris "Birdman" Andersen clone , but could be a better offensive player.

Absolutely agree.

He may be the young, quick and athletic big that we need for our frontline. We really need a swatter. True, he may yet be the guy that would fit in ala CP3-and-Tyson Chandler.

He can`t play basketball. Just doesn`t understand the game. He is the Gerald Green of centers. Great physical ability but doesn`t have any idea how to play the game...He will be out of the league in a year or two...

i respect the posters who feel he's not serious about his career, but also think it's possible he may have taken a different path if surrounded by guys other than CDR, rafer alston, vince carter and bobby simmons (i.e. knuckleheads) in a place other than the swamp. he needs the right environment, clearly.

would you rather have jr giddens or sean williams? sign him to a 10-day, kick the tires....

and if the Cs can 2-for-1 giddens and scal or sheldon and scal for a servicable wing or 1, i would be all for signing him for the rest of the season. he just has to stay off the BC campus

Even if he wasn't waived I would offer Giddens and Sheldon Williams for him . He's not even playing in New Jersey so they can't have that high of an asking price for him.

i don't see danny and doc wanting to trade sheldon for sean williams. i could see them trading sheldon in the right deal, but sheldon is clearly the more reliable back-up of the two right now.

Isnt that why we signed Rasheed this summer? And isnt that the role BBD and Sheldon Williams play? If we traded Sheldon then I would gladly take a gamble on Williams I think hes a great defensive player. But I dont want to fill up our open roster spot with him just yet.

People have been getting roped in by this kid's "potential" for years.  

Well, now he's an been in the NBA for a few years and he's proven that he still doesn't get it. He's never going to.  His game is fairly limited skill-wise and there really hasn't been any improvement since his days at BC.

Wouldn't you have said the same thing about Sheldon Williams before this season? The Hawks wasted the 5th overall pick on Sheldon, but when you surround him with vet defensive minded teammates and limit his role he can be a good solid big man off the bench.

I think you could see a similar result if Sean Williams were to ever join this team. When young players are all on the same team like NJ they are very selfish because they want to put up numbers so they can earn a second contract. When you put him on a vet championship contender as their 12th or 13th man I think he would fall right in line. It's a low risk high reward situation. This would likely be his last shot to stick in the NBA so if that didn't motivate him we could just cut him.
