The Milwaukee Bucks buy out the contracts of Luke Ridnour and Hakim Warrick then the Celtics trade Bill Walker, JR Giddens, a bunch of cash and 2 future second round picks for two trade exceptions and then sign Ridnour and Warrick.

I mean if the Alston to Miami buyout and then trade of Quinn is allowed, doesn't set the precedent for a whole bunch of moves just like this to happen?

I don't think deals like this are anything new.  As mentioned, we did the exact same thing with Mikki Moore last year.

If Ridnour and Warrick were free to sign anywhere, the league would probably allow it.  However, if the league found that we'd contacted their agent beforehand to arrange something, then we'd be looking at some sort of sanctions.  It's the risk teams take when they do stuff like that.

What happens if the league finds out that it's the Bucks that say to the agents, "we want to buy you out so that we can make this trade with Boston to lower our payroll and get some operating cash but it will only happen if they know you would be very, very, very interested in immediately signing with them upon being bought out by us. Would you be extremely interested in signing with Boston if we did this?"

Technically Boston has no contact with the agents but there is definitely some circumvention going on.

If this is what occurred with the Mikki Moore situation, then I'm disappointed because I just don't like this type of rules circumvention though I guess it happens with buyouts all the time in the NBA. I just don't think it's right, even if it does benefit the Celtics, which, BTW, I can't say the Mikke Moore situation did. Moore was pretty less for the C's.

This is fine, as long as Ridnour and Warrick agree to sign with Boston for league minimum money, since Boston can't offer more than that.

The buyout of Alston and the Quinn trade may be related, but aren't part of a single transaction. Miami could have traded Quinn to any team willing and able to use a trade exception; it just happened to be Jersey.

I am confused by this idea.  Why would Milwaukee do this?  They would be giving up two very valuable players to a team trying to make the playoffs, and all they are getting back is cash (which would barely cover the contracts of Walker and Giddens) and a couple second round picks??

Now, maybe if Ridnour and Warrick agreed to give back a ton of money on their buyouts...but why would they do that, if they can only get the minimum from Boston?

Ultimately, I see nothing wrong with the Miami thing, because it is just a way to work around the cap within the rules.  No different than trades to relieve luxury tax concerns.
