How do we rebuild before the big 3 is no more?

I would like to get your feedback of ways we can rebuild before we become a .500 or under club once again in the next few 2-3 years. Who can we trade is anyone worth it? who can we draft as long as we are getting in the playoffs keep in mind the low first round draft picks. My idea is to build around Perk and Rondo replace the 2,3,4 loose giddins keep walker he has potential. What are you thoughts.

I think so much of this will depend on how we handle contracts this summer  Do we resign Ray?  Does Pierce opt out and take a franchise friendly contract?  I think we're still a few years away from the downfall of the big 3.  In that time we have to hope that Perk and Rondo continue to develop into key pieces we can build around.

And of course we can do what Red was reluctant to do all those years ago when Bird, Parish, and McHale were on their last legs; trade away one of our fading stars (when that time comes) while they still have value for some young fringe all-star level talent or pieces.

I'm hoping in a few years that we can take a shot at landing Durant with a max deal when he's ready to sign his first big contract to play alongside a hopefully allstar Rondo and Perk.  That would be the best case since he'd already be seasoned at that point.

We're in a tough spot. The last time a team would want to trade for Ray is the deadline of this year. If we do that, we probably don't win the title. But if we keep him, we won't ever be able to trade him if we want to. Idk, a lot of questions are going to have to be answered, and really, we can't speculate until the groundwork questions have been answered - and that won't happen for a while.

OK we know Rondo will be making 10m next year Perk 5-6m, We keep Ray as long as we have a title shot he will stick around he's a smart player he will take 7-8 m for his final contract, Pierce He took a paycut a few years ago so we could get Ray and Kevin but i can't say if he will opt out of his contract to help the Celtics as long as he is the star this is t he guy who drives around town with his Range Rover with M.V.P in his headrest. I would like for the C's to take a shot at Melo he might be a little too much then in that case i agree with Durant he's young 1st big contract, he'll have vets around him and a shot at the Championship hopefully he has a smart agent who would see that move would make him millions for his 2nd big contract.

I wouldnt complain if somehow we were to end up with Melo but he doesnt exactly scream "Celtic" to me......Kevin Durant well, that mans got more of a personality that represents what the Celtics are all about.

The only clear + major opportunity available to the Celtics is Ray Allen and his expiring contract.

Outside of that, the Celtics have limited opportunities for rebuilding on the run. Better to ride it out and start retooling around Rondo and Perk once Pierce's + KG's contracts expire.

Personally, I'd rather wait to rebuild until after the Big Three are no more.  As others have said, the only way to possibly avoid any sort of off-season would be to start trading members of the Big Three.  While some may like that idea, I fear screwing things up and blowing the last couple years that they have left. 

I'd personally rather ride this thing out for 2-3 more years, let their contracts expire, then try to reload with free agents around Rondo and Perkins.

Hmm...I think next summer's free agent bonanza will be a game of musical chairs:  there are more really good FA's than teams with big money cap space.  lebron, wade, bosh, and old pal (and should-be Celtic) Joe Johnson will probably get max deals, and Amare, and maybe one or two more will get 10 million, but, some will fall...maybe all the way to the mid level.

I think if we can get a solid young player with upside next year for the mid level exception, it would be our transition to the next phase of the team.  I think Rudy Gay will drop, and I think we could make a strong push for him.

wink wink MLE deals with rising and/or established stars...and then sign them long term once we have them under an initial deal (is this legal?) a boy can hope can't he?

You can't go in two directions at the same time. I don't think there's anything we can do to make a smooth transition from big 3 to post big 3 without a risk of hurting our chances of winning now. The best that we can do is make the down period as short as possible. How we manage the cap is going to be big in the next few years.

When KG and Pierce come of the books itll probably be enough for one max player and another rising star.  Hopefully something like Kevin Durant at max in the best situation, a great running mate for Rondo.  Tyreke Evans rookie contract should run out around that time as well, imagine that 1, 2, and 3combo of Rondo pg, Evans sg, and Durant at the 3.  Perk at the 5.  Wow
What makes this realistic is that Danny was very high on both Durant and Evans, and I believe he has somewhat of a relationsihp with Durant.  That would be a team that could contend for 10 years!
