After getting his contract, the general reaction on this board seemed to be either, we over-paid, but we had to get it done; or, the numbers are about right. The first few games, when his play was a little off, you could smell the panic on the board questioning whether Rondo was just mailing it in now that he got his big fat contract signed.

Well guess what?  Rondo is our best player. Our most valuable player. He is the motor on this team. He is the guy who makes the others step it up, get into the extra gear. Sure, he still has his flaws, particularly foul shooting and the outside J. Still:

Rondo is underpaid.

Great article in today's Herald about Rondo, see link below.

Well, for this year he is.  when his contract kicks in next year he's getting the real $.

When (not if--I have faith) he develops a reliable jumper out to 16-18 feet, he'll be worth even more.

KG is the teams motor, Rondo is the turboboost when he wants to be.  I think Rondo has a fair contract.

I don't know why people keep harping about Rondo's outside jumper. Rondo can score at will with his jumper mediocre as it is.

In particular, the flaw that deserves attention is free throw shooting, because it means that you can't put the ball in his hands in the end of games with confidence.

overpaid everyday of the week, overrated also, yeah I'm a Celtic fan for 20 years, but he's overrated, nobody who can't step up and took a shot and win you the game at the end, don't deserve this kind of money, he gets. Let him to improve his shot and then talk for him, now many players in the league can do what he do for less money, to distribute the ball, and steal the ball, do you realise with who he is playing, PP, RA, KG, even I and you can dish 7-8 assists a game with those guys. I don't want to dissrespect the guy, he's very good, but most of our fans, think him for something so special... and he's far from that, if he's on another team, he will be a lot worse. So basically two things:

1) Rondo need to upgrade his jumpshot (you can't argue with that), the boy can't make a shot even if you point a gun to his head

2) We'll see what player is Rondo, when the Big Three retire, when he'll be the man, the capitan of the team, well that's what I want, because now he's in Big Three's shadown, everything he do is up on them, we'll see can he be the man when they left, and he has to step up and be the man

I think Rondo's contract is close to fair value in terms of current ability. Slightly underpaid but not by much.

In terms of current ability + potential ... I definitely think Rondo is underpaid. The Celtics got away with having to pay a penny for his potential.

Rondo's contract is currently fair. If he improves on his jumper and free throw shooting, which he will by the time the playoffs roll around IMO, he will be underpaid... The Celtics got a very good deal.

I want every player on the Celtics to be underpayed.

You can always fit more underpayed players on a good team the a bunch of overpayed players.

I disagree that Rondo is our best player.  Pierce and KG are still both better, and more valuable.

In terms of being underpaid, he's going to be paid like a top seven or eight point guard.  That's about where he belongs, most likely, provided that he can be fairly consistent.  Even on his best days this season, he's still a tier below a max contract.

I'd like to see Rondo improve his shooting and his consistency.  At that point, we can talk about him being in the class of guys like CP3 and Deron (or Pierce and KG).

No, Rondo can't score "at will".  He scores highly efficiently, but he can't score "at will".  If he could truly score "at will" (i.e., whenever he wanted to) he'd be averaging more than 11.0 points, the fifth best average on the team, and the eighth best in terms of points per minute.

I mean, can Kendrick Perkins score "at will"?

And he probably would, if he didn't have to feed three players who are accustomed to taking 15+ shots per game.

He could score a whole lot more if he wasn't trying to pad his assist totals.  Maybe he can't score at will but he can get to the rim at will.
