Mcdyess on sheed signing with the C's

"The things (the Pistons) had going with Boston the last couple years, I was surprised he signed there, and not only me," McDyess told the San Antonio Express-News. "A lot of the other guys on our team in Detroit were surprised.

"It wasn't genuine dislike between us and the Celtics, but when you compete so hard against a team, well, it would have been like Reggie Miller going to New York from the Pacers. You know the guys on his team would have been saying, 'Oh, you want to go to New York?' "

i am surprised he dislikes us this much.

i only felt that while he was playing there. we were only competitors on the 07-08 yr. we had their number last yr, while they dominated before the KG/ray trade.

that explains why he wouldn't sign with us

Nah, this sounds reasonable - he says it isn't genuine dislike, but there was obviously a rivalry there, where we came out of nowhere to finalize the Pistons no longer being an Eastern power.  Despite how the Pistons tended to coast in the regular season, they always got up for us.

I agree that that 08-09 season where Sheed was clearly halfway out the door for most of the season probably helped a lot of that.  His friendship and mutual respect with KG was a major factor too.  But if he'd've been a free agent in 08 I think he doesn't even consider coming here.

Yeah, I saw that quote and was surprised too. You're right, it probably explains why we didn't hear his name in the possible signatures of this summer.

But I have a hard time believing the Pistons were considering the Celtics as rivals like Reggie Miller and the Pacers considered the Knicks... I mean, the C's and Pistons played against each other for the ECF one year, that's all. Sure, they did play with a competitive spirit in the regular season 07-08 but still... nothing I would call a rivalry. The liked to play against each other because each team felt it was the cream of the East, but that's it.

I really like McDyess but I don't understand his point. Especially when you consider that he signed with the Spurs, the team that beat Detroit in the 05 Finals to win the title... pretty ironic, huh? ???

I think McDyess misread Sheed's competitiveness.  He has always been a super competitive guy, but I don't think he has ever been the type who holds grudges against other players that play him hard.  He has always held several of the C's in very high regard, and to me, it was not surprising at all that he wanted to play with them.

I completely understand what Dice is saying here. Could you picture Paul Pierce on the Pistons? That comparison might not fit but I do know it took

1. A strong existing bond between KG and Sheed.

and

2. A helluva recruiting trip

to get sheed here.

Just to add, the feeling of betrayal that some of the Pistons may be feeling could stem from the playoffs in 08 when they got on Sheed for his pre game man love with KG. Maybe when Dice says he was surprised, he really wasn't so surprised.

I can't see PP leaving the Cs period at this point of his career.
but it was only a rivalry for 1 yr as far as the current pistons-celts are concerned. we were at the bottom for so long while they were on top of the league. I just don't see what the big deal is. that year felt like finally we can beat them rather than get beat down every time

Agree. I think Sheed is the epitome of "On Court Aggressive." But he's quite smart off the court, and seems to have little bad blood with other players. He really knows how to drop F-bombs and throw you an elbow then have a drink out afterward. That's why I always thought lumping Artest/Sheed was unfair: Artest is actually insane.

Um, wasn't McDyess on the 2004-05 Piston team that lost to the Spurs in the Finals?

And who does he play for now? I'll think of it in a minute....someone help me out.

Good for him I guess signing with the Spurs because it sounds like he couldn't have signed with the top teams in the East since they all have playoff history with the Pistons. Not sure why he's OK with that though. Maybe it's because they didn't play the Spurs as often or because the Pistons and Spurs historically don't have a rivalry.

There is a Rasheed interview on Spurs.com which is very interesting, about McDyess and his quote (among other stuff) : http://www.nba.com/spurs/multimedia/091203_wallace.html

I know Sheed is a great teammate but I can't help imagine how great the lockers in which he is part of must be great. Dice seems like a really good guy too, Sheed is talking about him with a lot of respect and sympathy.

Should be fun to see these two play against each other tonight. :)

Dice is unconventionally motivated and an odd guy.  Despite Sheed's antics and reputation, I can understand his motivations a lot more.
2016 CelticsBlog Draft: Chicago Bulls

Starters: Rubio, Danny Green, Durant, Markieff Morris, Capela
Bench: Sessions, Shumpert, G. Green, T. Booker, Frye

And that may be part of the reason why our guys went to Sheed's house to talk him into joining the C's.
