Hi there,

My brother is writing a nba article for a magazine. To complete the article he wants to fill it with a little side note about the top 3 nba players that aren't playing like the expected to play this season.

He asked me what my top 3 was. But before i give hime my take i wan't to know what you guys think?

So could you guys name 3 players with a argument why?

We saw a mid level one the other night in Daequan Cook.  He's been brutal.

You'd have to say Shaq, though not everyone had lofty expectations for him.

Other direction:  Channing Frye.  His career high in 3's prior to this season was 11.  He has 46 in 17 games so far.
Yup

* Gilbert Arenas
* Caron Butler
* Amare Stoudemire

... Shooting percentages, scoring numbers, turnovers, defense, rebounding (Amare alone on that one)

Two players with All-NBA talent + one All-Star caliber talent (Butler) who aren't performing anywhere near their abilities.

  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
1. Mike Conley, Jr. -- He looked like he'd turned the corner after the all-star game last year.  Thus far this season, his points, shooting percentage, three point percentage, and steals are all down, and his turnovers and fouls are both up.

2. Elton Brand -- We all knew he was injured, but the stats are terrible.  The $80 million man is averaging 12 points / 6.7 rebounds.

3. David West -- His points, rebounds, and shooting percentage are all down from last year, and the Hornets are terrible.

Bonus: James Harden -- He had a couple of big games, but overall, he's looked pretty bad this year.  A lot of people were expecting a lot more from him.

1. Brandon Jennings - this story is a bit overplayed at this point, but it's still true - he's performing much better than expected.

2. Chris Kaman - he's been something of a monster so far for the Clips, probably the team's MVP - no one expected that.

3. Steve Nash - he also gets a lot of pub, but pretty much everyone thought he was going to get worse this year - instead, he's only gotten better.

One who should definitely be up there is DJ Augustin.  He had a very promising rookie year but his numbers have gone off a cliff this year.  Looks awful out there so far tonight too.

Andris Biedrins has been pretty bad, too.

  • Rondo = Good

He's a rookie; he started out the year slow but as he's gotten more used to the team and learned how to play without the ball in his hands most of the time he's started to score with more regularity.  I think he'll bounce back.

I can't say I'm really surprised by that; when you're a center and you play for Don Nelson you hardly get regular minutes. Plus like somebody else said, he's been injured.

Amare Stoudemire

Really?  Whenever I've watched the Suns it's seemed like Amare was playing really well.

I've been very disappointed with Amare. He's still playing terrible defense + he's posting the worst rebounding numbers of his career (only 7.2 rebounds per 36). He's gone from being a mediocre to slightly above average rebounder (a couple of seasons ago) to being very poor.

Amare is also doubling up on that by not being involved enough offensively. Only 13-14 shots per game. He's an incredible scorer who should scoring 25-30 points a night, and relatively easily in that system too, but he isn't involving himself enough offensively to get that done. Amare is still as efficient as ever but he's not getting enough shooting attempts to take full advantage of his offensive talent. He hasn't looked as sharp or as comfortable as he once was attacking defenders. Also, still can't/won't pass the ball.

I'm hoping it's only a temporary situation due to his injury, his comeback from injury, and not a permanent change ... we'll see as the year goes on ... but so far, very disappointing performance from Amare.

The lack of assertiveness offensively + very poor rebounding + the continued lack of improvement defensively being the causes.

Agree. I hadn't heard his name all night, so I went to chekc to see if he was injured...nope. Just serious regression. And I thought he was why they were thinking about letting Felton go, then he's not only not starting, but his minutes are down too.

It's my fault, I let Roy Hobbs talk me into taking him for my fantasy team....

hes definitely not in the top 3 or anything and hes been playing fine, so dont jump all over me, but I was expecting Derrick Rose to REALLY take off this year.  Hes averaging 15 and 5 right now, which isnt bad at all, but I was definitely expecting him to be like a 24 and 8 guy this year.....and he still might.

....Im also glad someone mentioned Gilbert Arenas.  Hes gone from being a mild-chucker before his knee injuries to full blown chucker mode now.  Hes averaging 20 a game but hes taking like 18 shots a game and only shooting 39% from the field.  He did score 30 once this season, but it took him 27 shots to do it.  Oh...and 4 turnovers a game doesnt help either. He's on the fringe of becoming Antoines successor.
